Investing in Maine Medical Center neuro technologists and nurses.

At the 2026 KAT-Walk & Karo-5K for Brain Aneurysm Awareness, we were pleased to present a scholarship to Elizabeth Winship for passing her Neuro Rehabilitation course.

The Maine Brain Aneurysm Awareness Committee has established a Medical Education Fund in conjunction with Maine Medical Center’s neuroscience community that: Supports the education for interventional radiology technologists and nurses, and clinical nurses caring for neurologically impaired patients.

Enhances education and knowledge in the neurosciences, thereby improving the health and quality of life for patients suffering from neurological diagnoses.

Used to expand the expertise, and promote excellence and professionalism for clinicians caring for neurological patients.

Emergency Nurses appreciation week kicked off yesterday. As a @tipgreaterportland volunteer I have had the opportunity to watch in awe the incredible work they do in an incredibly tough job. As volunteers, we support survivors of tragic events a few times each month, but these ER nurses do this every day. They treat their patients, support the families, care for the sick and injured, save lives and witness some really upsetting things. I am thankful that our TIP volunteers take advantage of this week each year to honor and thank these nurses for the hard work that they do. I always enjoy dropping off treats for them and the opportunity to say thank you. TIP appreciates ER Nurses.

Today, Ashby and I, along with his amazing Perkins team, got to share his story at the Massachusetts State House for CVI Awareness Day. We talked about how far he’s come with his vision and how much early diagnosis and the right supports have mattered.

And all day, I kept thinking about Dr. Alexa Craig.

Dr. Craig consulted on Ashby’s case in our NICU in the summer of 2024 and met with us virtually on one of the worst days of our lives. I remember learning that she was a fellow Mainer, and at the time, I thought that would be the little connection that made me remember her— a small connection to home on my worst day. I truly had no idea just how lasting her impact on our family would actually be.

She explained Ashby’s brain injury, what it could mean for his future, and her predictions that he would have cerebral palsy and epilepsy. She also told us there was a very strong likelihood he would have CVI. She explained what CVI was and, most importantly, that with the right support there are things that could possibly help.

Listening to others speak today made me realize even more just how lucky we were to have been connected with Dr. Craig.

Unfortunately, it is still pretty rare for a provider to be so knowledgeable about CVI, recognize the risk early, and actually share that information with families so they know what to look for and how to advocate for their child.

Ashby wasn’t diagnosed early because of routine CVI screening or a NICU follow-up protocol. He was diagnosed early because I knew what to look for and what to push for—and I knew that because of Dr. Craig.

Dr. Craig, I don’t know how to reach you, so I’m hoping by tagging @mainemedicalcenter this somehow finds its way to you.

Thank you for taking the time to educate two terrified parents on the worst day of their lives, and for doing it in a way that left me not only informed, but also empowered as I stepped into the role of being a medical mom and his greatest advocate. You may have only been part of Ashby’s story for a brief time, but the impact of that conversation has changed his life forever. For that, I am eternally grateful. ❤️

Last week marked the four-year anniversary of our Recuperative Care Program! Based at 934 Congress Street, this program provides a safe place for individuals experiencing homelessness or unstable housing to recover after surgery or illness. We are so grateful for our partners, @preblestreet and @mainemedicalcenter, who help make this program possible. Oh... and how could we forget the flourishing garden our incredible patients have created?!🌻

Breast cancer affects our friends, families, coworkers, and neighbors. This October, Portland Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 740 is proud to stand with those affected.

Our firefighters will be wearing these shirts on duty throughout October, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the MaineHealth Breast Care Center in Scarborough.

This is about more than a shirt. It’s about supporting our community.
