Jimbōchō: my favorite spots for a day in Tokyo’s book town 📚

Named the coolest neighborhood in the world by Time Out in 2025, Jimbōchō is a literary oasis for bibliophiles and stationery lovers. Known as the “Book Town,” this one-of-a-kind district is home to over 150 bookstores, publishing houses, and academic institutions! ✨

Here are some of my favorite spots:
1️⃣ Yaguchi Book Store - the iconic photo spot
2️⃣ Bumpodo - stationery heaven
3️⃣ Tobichi - the Hobonichi store, I’m obsessed!
4️⃣ Stacks Book Store
5️⃣ Takeo Paper Shop, Kanda - the most beautifully organized paper shop I’ve ever seen
6️⃣ Magnif - magazine paradise
7️⃣ Dill Coffee Parlor & Pharos Coffee for a much-needed break (there are many others like Glitch Coffee & Roasters and Walkabout Coffee too!)

Japan is packed with amazing Pokémon experiences all across the country ⚡ so if you’re planning a trip, here’s my ultimate list of Pokémon-themed experiences you can’t miss!

🚂 Pokémon with YOU Train – Tohoku
There’s a Pikachu train running between Ichinoseki and Kesennuma in Iwate Prefecture! It’s part of a project to support communities affected by the 2011 earthquake.

🌸 Prefecture Ambassadors
Several Pokémon are official ambassadors for different regions of Japan and it’s meant to support the visibility of each prefecture.
· For example, Vulpix in Hokkaido, Geodude in Iwate, Lapras in Miyagi, Chansey in Fukushima, Sandshrew in Tottori, Dragonite in Fukui, Oshawott in Mie, Slowpoke in Kagawa, Quagsire in Kochi, Ampharos in Nagasaki, Alolan Exeggutor in Miyazaki and Growlithe in Okinawa.

🫶🏻 Pokéfuta (Pokémon Manholes)

🛍️ Pokémon Center and Stores
These official stores are located in cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and more. You can also find smaller Pokémon Stores in Narita or Tokyo Station!

Look at how many soft served ice creams we had in ten days. No regrets. This was one of our Hokkaido missions and I would do it all over again!🍦😭

Hokkaido is Japan’s dairy capital and the soft serve here is unreal: smooth, rich, and never overly sweet. Every region has its own flavor too: fresh farm milk, yubari melon, lavender, cheese… 🪻🍈

Make it a challenge on your next Hokkaido trip too, you won’t regret it ✨

Chiikawa Bakery is my favorite Chiikawa spot in Tokyo and if you’re a fan, you absolutely cannot skip this one! ✨

🍞 What’s on the menu?
Character-shaped breads filled with custard, chocolate, or caramel cream, cream cornets, milk bread, beetle waffles, and seasonal limited items throughout the year. Plus lattes with Chiikawa latte art and character-inspired juices 🥤 Bread starts from ¥590!

🎟️ How to get in
A reservarion is usually required for the bakery which you can get via their official website. The merch shop is walk-in friendly! Pro tip: show up right at opening on a weekday and you might get lucky without a reservation 🤞

📍 How to get there
3rd floor of Tokyu Plaza Omotesando “Omokado” in Harajuku. 1 min from Meiji-Jingumae Station Exit 5, or 7 min from Omotesando Station Exit A2.

Extra spot: There’s also Hinode Park, just note that lavender is the star here, and ours was already gone by early September. Aim for July! 🪻

Between late June and early August the fields are at their most vibrant, with lavender stealing the show in July 🪻

If you’re visiting Hokkaido in summer, Farm Tomita in Furano is an absolute must! It’s one of the most photographed spots in the entire prefecture, with rows of flowers stretching as far as you can see 💜

Best time to visit:
Blooms run from April to October, but aim for mid to late July to catch the lavender at its peak 💜

More than lavender:
Farm Tomita isn’t just purple! They have so many other vibrant flowers too, all laid out in perfectly orderly rows across the hillside ✨

Things to eat:
🍦 Lavender icecream
🍈 Furano melon
🌽 Fresh corn
🍞 Meronpan

How to get there:
🚗 By car: about 1 hour from Asahikawa or 2 hours from Sapporo. However, we stayed in Furano which was nearby!
🚂 By train: from June to August, the seasonal Furano Biei Norokko Train stops directly at Lavender Farm Station, just a 7-minute walk from the fields!

Tip:

Aomori in sakura season, captured on film 🌸 These frames are from my April spring trip through this amazing prefecture in Tohoku! Locations are Hirosaki Park, Ashino Koen Station and Hirota Shrine ⛩️

All shot on my Olympus Trip 35 and I used @film.hundred 1HUNDRED 100 ISO and @kodak_shootfilm Gold 200 for the last ones. Thanks to @dubblefilm for developing these so well!

This is Snoopy Village in Otaru, Hokkaido, a Snoopy-themed shop inside a gorgeous building on Sakaimachi street!

Don’t leave without trying the cutest Snoopy-shaped taiyaki and the drinks topped with Snoopy marshmallows 🥹

And check the stamp at the entrance and exclusive Otaru goods, there are things you can only find at this location 👀

A few months ago I visited Aomori Prefecture for the first time and I genuinely think it’s one of the most underrated places in Japan! I had so much fun there during cherry blossom season and there are so many things to do that I will definitely be back as soon as I can 🌸

You may have also heard about Aomori because it’s also famous for the Nebuta Festival, one of the most spectacular festivals in all of Japan, held every summer in August 🏮

Fun fact: Aomori produces around 60% of Japan’s apples, so you’ll see a lot of apple-themed stuff all over the place! 🍎

Here are a few spots worth adding to your list:

1️⃣ Hirota Shrine, Aomori City: this is a really beautiful shrine, but what really got me were the apple hanachozu, the omamori (lucky charms) and goshuin (stamp book)!

2️⃣ Nebuta Museum Wa Rasse: if you can’t visit during the Nebuta Festival, don’t worry. This museum lets you get up close to the giant illuminated floats! 🏮

3️⃣ Apple Post Boxes: Aomori is Japan’s apple capital, so even the post boxes are shaped like apples! The one in this photo is right outside Hirosaki Station 🍎📮

4️⃣ Hirosaki & Hirosaki Park: the park is iconic for cherry blossoms in spring, but it’s lovely no matter when you visit 🌸🏯

5️⃣ Takayama Inari Shrine, Tsugaru: there are over 200 vermillion torii gates winding down a hillside toward rice fields and the Sea of Japan, and with no crowds! ⛩️🦊

6️⃣ Ashino Koen Station, Goshogawara: one of the most charming little train stations in Japan 🚂

7️⃣ A-Factory, Aomori city: you can find apple juice, apple jam, apple sweets, fresh apples... Oh and the apple pies are so good, I had so many!!!

8️⃣ Try Aomori food like Kaiyaki miso: miso soup cooked and served inside a real scallop shell, eaten straight from the shell. The food scene here is amazing: make sure to also try nokke-don (fresh seafood rice bowl), miso-curry-milk ramen, matagi meshi (wild game rice dish), ichigoni (sea urchin and abalone soup), and many more that you’ll find there!
