Three weeks ago today, seven days prior to his 62nd birthday, my dad unexpectedly passed away. We don’t know for sure what happened, nothing really makes sense, and we may not get any answers for many weeks to come. I am truly grateful for all the support my family and I have received during this difficult time.

The hardest part had been the moments when I want to share something with him, but can’t anymore, so here are some things I wish I could tell him:

Saying that I miss you just feels like a gross understatement. I miss recalling memories of you without thinking about how those are all I will ever have now. I miss imagining my future without thinking about how you won’t be there for it. And I just miss doing any single goddamn thing without thinking about what I would have asked or told you about it or what you would’ve thought about it. You were the one I went to for everything, good or bad, problem or solution, and strategy or silliness.

You and I were the same person through and through, I am definitely not the mailman’s daughter… We had our ups and we certainly had our downs, but the downs helped us both learn how to navigate our relationship better as we entered into new chapters and phases. Without a doubt, the last couple years have been the best so far and I was so excited for the second half of our time together that now will never come. I would say “at least we ended on a high note”, but that final high note was supposed to be 25 years later than it was.
