Cineworks is proud to present a free screening of Sophia Wolfe's experimental dance documentary, 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳 21 (2025, 30:31 minutes).

The director will be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening.

𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳 21 is a powerful experimental dance documentary that captures a pivotal chapter in the life of Indigenous dance artist, performer, and mother, Starr Muranko. The film follows Starr in the lead-up to the premiere of a deeply personal performance, exploring the intimate intersection of her cultural identity, artistic journey, and the challenges of facing unexpected and life-altering events.

The film is a meditation on the power of resilience, transformation, and healing through the body, as Starr navigates the emotional and spiritual landscape of these challenges.

𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘦𝘳 21 is a celebration of the sacred act of creating in the face of adversity.

――The memory of Obon in KIAC🏮

祖母から受け継いだ、
海を渡った祖先の記憶——

カナダ西海岸地域を拠点に活動し、
日本とヨーロッパにルーツを持つ振付家リサ・マリコ・ゲリーによる、
世代を横断するリサーチプロジェクト。

約2週間の滞在制作では、日本のお盆に焦点をあて、
カナダ在住のアーティストらとともに、
豊岡市内の様々な盆踊りや儀礼を訪れ、
地域の方々といっしょに踊りました。

リサーチで出会った盆踊りやまちづくりの担い手のみなさんに、
インタビューを実施し、
参加者のみなさんのお盆の記憶を共有し
楽しく身体を動かすダンスワークショップも行いました。

それらの活動を通して、身体化された記憶を共有し、
ダンスパフォーマンスを創作。

8月30日のオープンスタジオでは、
参加者のみなさんのお盆の記憶を持ち寄り、
それぞれのお盆の思い出を話したり、
リサーチの軌跡をたどる展示をみたあと、
リサさんたちの踊りを輪になって鑑賞。

トークでは、リサさんのご先祖の、
カナダの日本人強制収容所での記憶や、
世界各地の日系コミュニティで
受け継がれ続けている「炭坑節」のお話などなど、
参加者のみなさんと語り合いました。

過去や喪失、断絶された文化の継承に向き合い、
100年後の盆踊りのあり方を想像してみる、貴重な時間でした。
今後のOceansの展開にご注目ください。

We’ll start with our Annual General Meeting, where we’ll fill you in on organizational business, update you on activities from our 10th anniversary, and share a bit of what to expect from us this year. 💙

Simply bring clothes you wish to swap or donate. Any clothes leftover will be donated to the DTES woman’s shelter and/or other nearby centres as needed.

Please note the building and room are wheelchair accessible, but unfortunately the washrooms are down a set of stairs.

Yesterday, I spent 2 hours alone basking in the Collisions of Commissions installation @vivomediaarts
 It was magical and emotional and overwhelming to sit in 10 years of material, relationships, art that has been made under the umbrella of FORM   💫 I kept thinking about all the humans behind all these films who made them happen. All the love and energy and care that went into each of those productions 💫 It was so amazing to see films from 2016 next to films from 2024
💫 I thought of all the memories and conversations I had with each of these artists as they were learning how to navigate how to make film for the first time
💫 I thought about their premiere dates, and the joy and nervous energy they had before and after their screenings
💫 I thought about all the spaces in and around Vancouver that these films were made in, like @what__lab , @left_of_main , @thedancecentrebc @cineworksvan and more— I thought of the generous containers and spaces that hold us artists and who have made space for us to play and try and process
💫 It was so sweet and special to see the logos grow and grow at the end of the films every year, the funders, the partnerships, the support networks are so so big and strong
💫 There was a sweet moment when I was watching one screen, and remembered Elizabeth and @chin.aidan film, and I had an impulse to look over my shoulder, and there she was dancing in the Sun Yat-Sen garden
💫 A special moment was when I was watching @_____________jr ’s incredible film, and crying as I was witnessing Zahra dancing on screen. At the same moment, her film soft teeth was playing on the screen beside me, and was also being projected on the wall — so the reflection of her film was also in the screen with Jamies film. It was so nice to dance with you again Z 💓

This year marks the 10th anniversary of @formvancouver, a lovely festival that celebrates movement and moving images.
I also realized that it has been 10 years (can’t believe it) since I submitted my second-ever dance film, Beyond the Frames, to @formvancouver. To my great and pleasant surprise, I received a package all the way from Canada at my family home in Karaj, Iran — a handwritten note and the festival program. Back in 2016. :)

Further back, one day when I was feeling tired of the limited access and opportunities for dance in Iran, knowing that traveling would be complicated and visas would always be an obstacle, I decided to explore my art through video. I knew it could travel further than I could! Completely unaware at the time that there was actually a whole screendance genre out there. But I had beautiful and supportive collaborators, so we did it!

Later, receiving a postcard from Sophia, the artistic director of FORM — who was also in her early years of experience of festival direction — was a bright sign to me that dance films truly connect people, and that people matter. This was proved to me a hundred more times later in my countless festival experiences.

Today, standing by Sophia and her wonderful team at FORM, I celebrate 10 years of our collaboration, from screening my films, to artist talks and exhibitions. A safe lovely Canadian corner to nourish and support especially the youth. :)

OUF,  10 Years of @formvancouver
 I dono where to begin. I owe so much to these people, this community who have shaped me, and changed me for the better, who have encouraged me and kept me inspired to keep this festival a float for the last decade.

 So many incredible films, artists, movers and makers who I’ve had the privilege of encountering over these years. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in helping us reach this moment ✨  

Please join us, for the opening tonight at @vivomediaarts from 6PM You’ll see most of the last 10 years of commissioned films  at 7PM @whichnancy gonna chat with @erinlum3 @daniellemckz and I about FORM and the form over the last decad then we eat epic cake by @api.eats and cheers and celebrate the start of a new decade 🥂

Im so so proud of this team who put to much into holding this years festival with such care and intention.  I love you all deeply,  thank you from the bottom of my heart <3  Words are hard rn 🥹

Sophia Mai Wolfe (she/her/hers) is a queer, Japanese-Canadian independent artist. She is a grateful guest of what is colonially known as Vancouver, on the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Her interdisciplinary practice moves through dancing, filmmaking, curation, editing, mentoring youth artists and emerging arts leaders, and, on occasion, acting. Her dance practice has taken her abroad, performing and touring internationally with local companies and independent choreographers.
