Over the past few weeks, I have spent more time in Venice than I ever had before. I returned for the exhibitions, but what keeps me there often happens between visits: people meeting, talking, working. Behind its almost unreal beauty, Venice retains the tangible presence of those who live in it and keep it going.

In Italian Hours, Henry James called it “the city of conversation.” He described voices carrying across the canals, with no sound of wheels to drown them out. I thought of his words while visiting The Only True Protest Is Beauty, the Fondazione Dries Van Noten exhibition bringing together art, fashion, design, jewellery and material experimentation.

Palazzo Pisani Moretta makes this encounter both compelling and difficult. Its rooms already have a history and a powerful visual presence. What I appreciated most were the dialogues between the photographs, the garments and the palazzo’s paintings.

The exhibition has its surprises: iconic pieces, half-open doors offering glimpses of precious objects, works placed where you would not expect to find them. But walking through such a vast palazzo also made me think about how difficult it is to sustain a rhythm throughout a visit. Christian Lacroix, Comme des Garçons and Codognato recur often, lending continuity to the exhibition, though at times they left me with a sense that the balance had shifted too far towards them.

It is a delicate curatorial balance. A place with such a strong identity can reveal unexpected aspects of the works it holds, but it can also overwhelm them. I am curious to see how future exhibitions will inhabit these spaces and what relationship they will build with the palazzo.

My congratulations to Dries Van Noten and Patrick Vangheluwe for establishing the Fondazione and opening Palazzo Pisani Moretta to the public.

If you would like to see The Only True Protest Is Beauty, make time for it soon: it closes on 4 October.

At first glance, Prada Spring/Summer 2027 can feel like more of the same. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons return to an exercise in reduction that has become a recurring thread of their collaboration, and was already part of the house’s language long before it began.

This time, the skirt provides the framework. Its changing shapes and silhouettes give the collection its stated focus, but they also make us look more closely at everything above the waist: tops reduced almost to fragments, narrow knits, turtlenecks and leather jackets. Giving the skirt centre stage brings the construction of the entire look into focus.

Several references coexist within that familiar Prada woman. There is her bourgeois composure, but also the technical, sport-inflected minimalism of the 1990s; a suggestion of grunge; and a rock-and-roll edge in the leather and the hair, somewhere between the 1950s and 1960s. Geometric cuts, asymmetrical glasses and strong horizontal bands sharpen the image. Across the collection, bands and rectangular inserts keep appearing in different places: a strip of colour running down a skirt, a small block at the waist, a top reduced to a band across the chest, a panel laid over a shirt. Their recurrence, within such a pared-back collection, brings to mind one of Helmut Lang’s most recognisable gestures. Lang used bands of colour, transparency or layered fabric almost as a way of signing a garment without a logo. Prada is not using them as a signature here, and the resemblance may be unintentional. It is a visual echo that becomes clearer the closer you look.

Reduction here does not mean an absence of decoration. Florals, prints, embroidery and richly worked fabrics stand out precisely because they are placed against such controlled shapes.

The overall look does not propose a new Prada woman. What feels fresh is found at closer range: in the fabric, the cut, the surface and the exact relationship between one garment and another. This is a collection that asks us to look at the product again, and, ideally, to touch it.
