Maja Ruznic’s (@majaruz) latest exhibition, ‘Who Tastes Fire and Cannot Speak’, at Contemporary Fine Arts (@contemporaryfinearts) in Basel is titled after a line in Louise Glück’s poem ‘Day Without Night’ (published in 1985). Glück imagines a hell made not of darkness and flames but of relentless bright light, in which the respite offered by the shadows is set in stark relief.

In a new film, the Bosnia‑Herzegovina‑born, New Mexico‑based artist speaks to editor‑in‑chief Louise Benson (@benson_louise) about intuitive painting, the beauty of shadows and ambiguity, and how her war‑ravaged family history influences her artistic practice.

Thank you

I thank the gray light and the morning dew as I drag my tired body, which hangs as if on a hanger, to wave goodbye to Mila. I smell the air, and it expands my lungs. It smells pale, and it is good.

It has been raining in the desert.
Where we live, the wells are drying up, and the river is not there.

Summer is fecund, and my nervous system gets disregulated during a time of flies, watermelons, flesh, and sweat. I try to lean in, but the body is hard to trick.

The cold is pale, and I yearn for it. I’ve been making pale paintings and listening to stories that belong to the Pale King.

Death is pale—bones and spirits. Silence is pale too. This is where I feel at home, and the desert, where I live, had quite the welcome for all of that today. by @majaruz

When painting feels dead, I go to color.
It isn’t until eyes go wide and the heart skips a beat that It arrives anyway.
Dioxazine purple dried for a day
Sticky like honey
Then manganese blue with some cobalt and a touch of radiant white to scumble on top.
Zinc white will have to wait until tomorrow I guess.
Can’t rush.
Rub the surface with a small-ish brush that’s not too shitty but also not new.
Cover every inch with the shimmering blue veil.

Then listen to David Foster Wallace’s short story ‘Backbone’ read by Adam Levin on the New Yorker Fiction Podcast and recognize yourself in the boy who tries to kiss every inch of his body.
And feel a 5 minute death of self
Thank God
Then think of the absence of the mother in the story
The enormous absence of the mother
Think of the sex addict father who stays behind the door
Then think of the child who has no doubt

My husband and I discuss the story at night
We’ve both arrived at something meaningful I think
The difference between obsession and faith
And we maybe land on this:
doubt might be the cradle for God by @majaruz

Maja Ruznic’s “Sea People” 2024, is available as an edition through TEXTE ZUR KUNST.

Ruznic’s figures are both primordial and fleeting, emerging from and dissolving into waves of green-blue and flesh-toned colour. In Sea People, transformation and fluidity meet the psychological and political depths associated with the sea.
