The artists in this chapter approach that possibility from radically different directions. Lucy Bull creates hypnotic fields that seem to exist between landscape and consciousness. Tomm El-Saieh builds dense surfaces from fragments of history and cultural memory. Maja Ruznic turns colour and atmosphere into psychological spaces. Paulo Nimer Pjota mixes mythology, graffiti and art history into strange new worlds. And Justine Hill constructs paintings in which figuration, abstraction and material structure constantly collide.

Together, they demonstrate that abstraction is not an escape from meaning.

Sometimes it is where meaning becomes most complicated.

Lucy Bull — Painting at the Edge of Language
Tomm El-Saieh — The Image Beneath the Image
Maja Ruznic — Colour as a Place
Paulo Nimer Pjota — Sampling the History of Images
Justine Hill — The Painting as Construction

“Maya Frodeman Gallery’s exhibition oscillates between Dodd’s revival of Transcendentalism and Bradford’s communal experience. Does it prove that a title-less group show consisting of women artists with no relationships to one another has a place—that’s how the bulk of women’s history has been documented—outside the norm, disconnected, and always willing to find an inner circle of unlikely heroines to explore empathy with and discover new ways to document the collective experience.” — Victoria Plasse for The Brooklyn Rail

Read the full exhibition review at the link in our bio. The exhibition closed September 13th, 2026 and is accompanied by a catalogue essay written by John Yau. DM us or email info@mayafrodemangallery.com for inquiries.

“Art is a radical form of spiritual resistance.”
— Maja Ružnić

In the second edition of Razgovori, Maja Ružnić reflects on home, memory, motherhood and the freedom of not having an answer in front of a painting. On what finds its way from everyday life into her work — and the quiet she finds there.

Maja Ruznic’s “Sea People” 2024, is available as an edition through TEXTE ZUR KUNST.

Ruznic’s figures are both primordial and fleeting, emerging from and dissolving into waves of green-blue and flesh-toned colour. In Sea People, transformation and fluidity meet the psychological and political depths associated with the sea.
