This month marks two years since the death of my husband.

We knew what was coming; he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer six months prior and his decline was undeniable. I watched the strongest, kindest, happiest man dwindle down into a sack of skin and bones who couldn’t bear to see his own image, let alone the sadness in my eyes reflecting it.

There are so many milestones he has witnessed me mark, dreams he has watched me chase, tears he has heard me cry since then. I carry him with me, shrouded in the clothing I kept from his closet. I speak his name to strangers in rooms he has never sat in. It turns out not even in death do we part. I feel him all the time, I imagine his judgement of the choices I am making and I know he is equally proud and amused by most of them. He really did know me, after all.

When he was sick, he was consumed with worry about what I would do next, what I was going to do when he was gone. Finally one day I told him:

“I am going to evangelize yoga— I want to help people and share what I’ve learned through my struggles. I think I will go to Bali and get certified. Maybe I could make videos and post them online… it sounds stupid but I want to change the world.”

He smiled, and said: “Do it.”

I’ve been incorporating all kinds of arm balances into my yoga practice lately. Once you can figure out the “tipping point”, it’s amazing how easy it is to find stability in the strangest of shapes. Stacking shoulders and wrists, shifting weight from your legs into your upper body, using the gaze to ground you.

It is much less about brute strength and much more about control: of your core, of your breath, of your thoughts. The only thing keeping you from flying is the belief you can’t. 🖤 taken in Agafay Desert, Morocco by @makeshapesnotwar
