What is MYOM?

Make Your Own Masters (MYOM) is a creative movement and incubator for emerging talent, built in response to a creative education system and industry that are becoming increasingly difficult to access.

The project began 8 years ago, founded by Stacie Woolsey as a personal response to being priced out of institutional education and facing growing barriers to entering the creative industry.

The idea to make your own education became a mantra, a methodology and, ultimately, a manifesto. One that seeks to disrupt the existing model and open up access across the creative industries.

Each cycle, MYOM brings together a collective of 11 emerging creatives and guides them through 18 months of building and sourcing their own creative curriculum, learning through practice, collaboration, mentorship and opportunity.

We are now opening up the project, sharing what we’ve learnt and exploring the bigger issues at problem at play. by @makeyourownmasters

On Saturday we’ll be discussing the ‘Talent Bottleneck’, the growing gap between industry and creative education.

As AI continues to absorb entry level roles and a cost of living makes it increasingly difficult to survive in the industry we must ask the important questions:

Is creative education fit for purpose?

Why is the creative industry harder to enter than ever before?

How do emerging creatives navigate this post-grad period?

Is creative education still fit for purpose?
Getting into the creative industry has never been harder. AI is swallowing the entry-level jobs that used to be an entry point.

Rising costs are pushing talent out of education before they even finish.

This panel will discuss why intervention is needed, who’s responsible and what a new path into creative work could look like.

Art schools - once a place of energy, even anarchy, now feel like relics.

We need to instigate and open up a conversation about how, and whether, creative education as we know it actually works.

What happens next?
Where does change come from?
Who could make a difference? by @makeyourownmasters

RO GEARTY*

Set Designer / Prop Maker / Stylist

Ro is a working-class designer exploring costume and set design as tools for visual storytelling and world-building. Their practice is rooted in objects, conversation, sustainable design and the mythologies embedded into everyday life. Ro is interested in creating the socially surreal, worlds that blur the familiar and the imagined as a route to explore how radical imagination and immersive art can make art more accessible, participatory and connected to everyday experience.

LUCINDA PURKIS*

Visual Artist / Illustrator

Lucinda Purkis is a multi-disciplinary visual artist based in London, originally from Exeter. At the heart of their practice is continuous drawing whereby they have developed rituals of repetitive mark making to enable their interior world to flow out onto the page. In this way visual languages intuitively emerge mapping personal codes of religious iconography, patterns, sequences, avatars, combined with words, phrases and signs of the city. These characters drift between recognisable motifs and abstract emblems, simultaneously representing a deeply personal world and one that contains universal symbols open to interpretation.

Purkis works across disciplines including textiles, digital print, screen printing, painting, patchwork and collage to transpose and make tactile their drawings and writings.Human avatars merge in their work and serve as emotional embodiments, hinting at mythological and biblical characters, often serving as self portraits. These characters shift and evolve between genders and are often subtle explorations of the trans-masculine experience.

Access isn’t just unequal, it’s disappearing.

The result will create a ripple effect across creativity: film, TV, media, music, fashion, design. A hollowing out of all that thrives on new voices and ideas. by @makeyourownmasters
