Such an honor to photograph behind the scenes of @crowmedicine’s latest video filmed at @brooklynartscenter. They are using their platform to speak out for much needed gun reform, and I have so much respect for all of them!

Five of my photos from a story I worked on for @southernenvironment were featured in a gallery at Climate Week NYC.

When I was in law school, I dreamed of working with the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC). I never imagined that when I finally did, my work would involve holding a camera instead of a legal brief. What an absolute thrill to be showcased alongside an organization I respect so much, and among other photographers I deeply admire.

Happy National Oyster Day🦪

ENC Ambassador Spotlight: Oyster Fisherwoman Äna Shellem

The tides rule her days, not a clock nor a calendar. Want to meet Monday morning, for coffee and a catch-up? She first needs to check the lunar charts; a new moon might be rising. Where will she be on Wednesday afternoon? Hard to say. Will the wind be from the southeast or out of the north? She could be in the Masonboro marshes. Or along a tidal creek off the Cape Fear River. She’ll have to get back to you. She’s on a schedule as ancient as the sea.

Äna Shellem of Shell’em Seafood is a forager of wild shellfish, a harvester of oysters collected from the muck and marsh, and a purveyor of Atlantic delicacies for some of Eastern North Carolina’s most heralded restaurants.

From whelks to tulip shells, mussels to sea beans, Shellem lives and makes a living in concert with the seasons. With a hori-hori knife in hand, she bends down to a bed of mussels sheltered by the spartina marsh, and deftly cleaves a cluster. Sustainable. Organic. Zero waste. Wholly wild. Cradled in her hands is a promise of Eastern North Carolina’s culinary future. by @mallorybcash

“I don’t eat shellfish that time of year, but I’m also not trying to eat a tomato sandwich in January. I always say, eat in season — it’s good for a reason. You can taste the difference.”

This article brought me to tears today. Tears of pride and joy.
The incredible feeling of being understood.
Hard work pays off.

Thank you friends. It’s the long term relationships that stick by my side that help me rise.

Thank you @gardenandgun ⚓️🙏🏼 it is truly a privilege to be featured in your latest edition.

Once my company @shellemseafoodco started gaining momentum - it was a personal goal to be included in your publication somehow…. I am blessed that the stars aligned! So thankful to work with your team, @worth.parker & @mallorybcash 🙏🏼 The illustrations are an extra special touch.

Thank you for the recognition and celebration of the work I do. I’m so thankful for the team that helped assemble this article! It turns out hard work can lead to tangible rewards. by @mallorybcash

Next issue is hitting the streets next week. Look forward to at story, originally published by The Assembly, about how James and Sarah Doss of Rx Chicken & Oysters go spearfishing to catch the invasive lionfish. Then serve them at the restaurant.

Writer Kevin Maurer and Madeline Gray goes out on the boat with them. Then Mallory Cash and I go into the kitchen to watch these colorful fish with venomous spines are turned into dinner. by @mallorybcash
