It’s so special for us to share this with you all:

🎟️🚨 Tickets for Saltwater Cinema at Thalian Hall are live!! 🚨🎟️

We’re so proud to help support the work of Cape Fear River Watch (@capefearriverwatch) and Oyster South (@oystersouth_) with proceeds from this event. These two organizations work tirelessly in service of our local communities and their environment—check them out to learn how!

We’ve got a special night in a special place with special people ahead of us. Join us for a double feature celebrating the people, traditions, and waterways that define sustainable seafood in the South. We’re kicking off the night at 5:30 with a reception to spend some time with six Southern oyster farmers, snack on some freshly shucked oysters, and enjoy a wine and beer bar.

The first of two screenings, “Shellbound: An Anthology of Southern Oyster Culture” explores the traditions, challenges, and communities shaping the region’s oyster industry today. Produced by The Local Palate magazine (@thelocalpalate) and BLK ELK (@blkelkco) supported by Oyster South, the documentary shares the stories of farmers and chefs, pulling back the curtain on oysters in the American South.

Next, enjoy “From Marsh to Table,” a short documentary originally produced for the Emmy Award-winning series “My Home, NC.” The film brings together wild seafood harvester Ana Shellem (@shellemseafoodco) and James Beard Award-winning chef Ricky Moore (@chefrickymoore) for an unforgettable day in North Carolina’s coastal marshes. The piece beautifully celebrates the connection between the water, the people who know it best, and the food it provides.

Stick around after the screenings for a conversation moderated by Erin Byers Murray (@erinbmurray) of The Local Palate magazine. Chef Dean will be joined by Conor MacNair (@n.sea.oysterco), Ana Shellem, Chef Ricky Moore (@saltboxseafoodjoint), film producer Maggie Ward (@ml_ward), and filmmaker Heather Burgiss (@theheathertales) in a behind-the-scenes look at what doing this work actually means to the people who love it and do it every day.

Tickets to every Out to Sea event are available via the link in our bio🥂🍿✨See y’all at Thalian Hall!

Happy National Oyster Day🦪

ENC Ambassador Spotlight: Oyster Fisherwoman Äna Shellem

The tides rule her days, not a clock nor a calendar. Want to meet Monday morning, for coffee and a catch-up? She first needs to check the lunar charts; a new moon might be rising. Where will she be on Wednesday afternoon? Hard to say. Will the wind be from the southeast or out of the north? She could be in the Masonboro marshes. Or along a tidal creek off the Cape Fear River. She’ll have to get back to you. She’s on a schedule as ancient as the sea.

Äna Shellem of Shell’em Seafood is a forager of wild shellfish, a harvester of oysters collected from the muck and marsh, and a purveyor of Atlantic delicacies for some of Eastern North Carolina’s most heralded restaurants.

From whelks to tulip shells, mussels to sea beans, Shellem lives and makes a living in concert with the seasons. With a hori-hori knife in hand, she bends down to a bed of mussels sheltered by the spartina marsh, and deftly cleaves a cluster. Sustainable. Organic. Zero waste. Wholly wild. Cradled in her hands is a promise of Eastern North Carolina’s culinary future.

The mud that splatters on my face while harvesting?
Those are temporary beauty marks from Mother Nature.
Sometimes they hit me in patterns I don’t even want to wash off.
Thankful that I have the kind of soul that feels best when hard work is accomplished. #ilovemyjob

Also thank you @mallorybcash for this glamour shot for @gardenandgun

“I don’t eat shellfish that time of year, but I’m also not trying to eat a tomato sandwich in January. I always say, eat in season — it’s good for a reason. You can taste the difference.”
