Malogo X Artsy (unofficial collaboration)
23rd September, 2026.

Elvis Chukwubueze Malogo is a Nigerian multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores the darker, often unseen sides of human experience. Working across painting, installation, and performative visual storytelling, Malogo has developed a distinctive visual language centered around one color: red.

His ongoing body of work, The Red Period, emerged from an intimate exploration of pain, grief, depression, vulnerability, memory, and survival. But for Malogo, red is more than a color. It represents blood, rage, sacrifice, violence, memory, and ultimately, rebirth.

Rather than creating art that simply asks to be admired, Malogo creates works that ask to be confronted. His provocative imagery often leaves viewers questioning what they are looking at and, perhaps more importantly, what they are feeling.

From exhibitions across Nigeria to an international presentation in Miami, Malogo’s practice continues to move beyond traditional painting, incorporating installations, conceptual interventions, and performance.

At the center of it all is a simple question:

What does your pain look like?

IN LOVING MEMORY OF SOPHIA 🕊️❤️

I spent the last one year of my life learning how to live with the absence of my cousin, Sophia.

A year later, I still find myself looking for you in little things.

I miss you, Sophia ❤️

The Crucifix

Installation
5 × 7 ft

At first glance, The Crucifix often evokes an immediate reaction. Many viewers assume its meaning before taking the time to truly observe it. That first impression is intentional. It reflects the way we often move through life, judging people, situations, and even beliefs by their appearance rather than by understanding them.

If this same cross were painted white and placed inside a church, many would instinctively bow before it. Yet because it is red, covered with symbols, and placed in an unconventional setting, it becomes unsettling. The work asks a simple question: How much of our judgment is shaped by context rather than truth?

The installation is composed of three crosses, recalling the crucifixion of Jesus Christ alongside the two thieves at Calvary. Rather than inventing new religious imagery, I borrowed symbols from early Christianity and Catholic tradition. Each symbol carries centuries of meaning, inviting viewers to research and discover them for themselves rather than receiving every answer from the artist.

The central cross, suspended in mid-air, is the emotional core of the installation. It represents a period in my life following my U.S. visa refusal in 2023. After that experience, I fell into depression for over a year. No matter how much effort I invested, every attempt seemed to produce no results. The suspended cross captures that feeling of being trapped between hope and despair, moving but never progressing. It serves as a reminder of those moments in life when we give everything we have, yet nothing appears to change.

Originally, I intended for the suspended cross to eventually fall and shatter during the exhibition as a performance element, symbolizing liberation from life’s obstacles. Due to the limitations of the exhibition space, that action could not be realized. Even in its stillness, however, the cross remains suspended between suffering and the possibility of freedom.

The two crosses on either side represent my mom and sister.

THE RED PERIOD TEASER GROUP EXHIBITION HAS COME TO AN END. ❤️

Yesterday marked the final day of The Red Period Teaser Exhibition, and what an unforgettable journey it has been.

To everyone who took the time to visit, engage with the works, sign the Book of Life, share kind words, support the artists, and be part of this experience, thank you. Your presence gave life to the exhibition and reminded us why art matters.

To those who couldn’t make it, thank you for your love, encouragement, messages, and support from afar. There will be more opportunities to experience what’s to come.

This exhibition may have ended, but The Red Period is only just beginning. The conversations, emotions, and stories explored through these works will continue to grow beyond the walls of the gallery.

Thank you for making this milestone so meaningful. Here’s to the next chapter.

With gratitude,
Malogo ❤️

Title: Stupid Old Fools (red period series)

We live in a society where some elders have abandoned the dignity and respect that age is often expected to embody. Speaking to strangers with kindness and consideration should be basic human decency, yet experiences that suggest otherwise have become increasingly common.

One day, while walking past two vehicles that had been carelessly parked, leaving little room for pedestrians to pass, I squeezed through the narrow space available. As I made my way through, an older man boldly remarked, “Small small, no break my glass oh.” His words, though casually spoken, carried an undertone of ridicule that I could not ignore. I am aware of my body and the fact that I am chubby, but such comments however, indirect amount to body shaming and reveal a troubling lack of respect.

Only a few minutes later, at the University of Lagos gate, I approached a tricycle, or “keke” as we call it in Nigeria, only to be met with yet another dismissive remark from the driver because of my size. The repetition of these encounters forced me to reflect on the society we are becoming.

For generations, we have been taught to respect our elders, to honour their wisdom and experience. Yet respect cannot exist as a one-sided obligation. If younger people are expected to extend courtesy to those older than them, should elders not be held to the same standard?

Stupid Old Fools emerges from this frustration. It questions the culture of entitlement that allows age to excuse insensitivity, while exploring the emotional weight of everyday interactions and the subtle ways in which prejudice and body shaming manifest in public spaces. Through this work, I seek to challenge assumptions about respect, dignity, and the responsibilities we owe one another, regardless of age.
