Kyra Nijskens isn't wasting any time capturing footage for her first film -

Last weekend Kyra visited Raabjerg to film the west coast's infamous sand dunes, which formed in the 17th Century following an order by King Christian IV to clear the area's oak forests and build warships for his royal navy, forcing villagers to cut other trees for firewood. This shipbuilding effort, and consequent deforestation, created an unstoppable sand drift that swallowed roads, farmland, and villages in West Jutland.

From there Kyra traveled to the northernmost tip of Denmark, where the Skagerrak and the Kattegat seas collide.

Our newest residents are here!
Yo-E Ryou and Kyra Nijskens have arrived at Malt AIR and will be in residence until the end of November.

Both artists ground their work in hydrofeminist thought, exploring how our bodies and cultures are fluidly interconnected with water and the wider natural world.

Yo-E Ryou is an artist based on Jeju Island, South Korea. Learning to swim after moving to the island in 2020 profoundly shifted her relationship to water and her artistic practice. As she continued into freediving alongside her neighboring Haenyeo community, her work has developed toward experiential and embodied ways of knowing. Working across moving image, writing, sound, drawing, and performance, she explores relationships between bodies and water, breath, language, and transmission. At Malt AIR, she will focus on how these forms of embodied knowledge might be translated and transmitted through artist books.
@whyryou

Based in Rotterdam, Kyra Nijskens works primarily in sculpture and poetic writing to explore how human activity reshapes ecological landscapes. Her recent works have focused on phenomena such as artificial reefs, biofouling, container spills, and technofossils as a way to reflect on how sea life responds to and transforms human-made, ocean infrastructures. At Malt AIR, Kyra will research local sea mythologies, hybrid creatures, and inter-species dependency and care, while experimenting for the first time with filmmaking.

A year ago, for the artist talk that concluded my residency at Malt AIR, I decided not to talk. Instead, I chose to show a small diary through which I wanted to share how my mind works: the places I inhabit physically and the many others that cross my life emotionally. Parallel lives I hold here and elsewhere. The photos weren’t planned, but they were taken on the dates that appear there, whether or not they related to events taking place elsewhere on the same day.

It surprises me to realise this was a year ago. We’re forgetting things far too quickly. Every day a new headline, almost immediately overshadowed by the next, and I’m here trying to stop and cry, or stop and feel, or stop and live.

☀️❤️‍🔥

Malt AIR Open Studios - June 25, 4-6pm

Ever wondered what happens inside an artist studio? Or maybe you are curious to see what goes on behind the scenes at Malt AIR?

On Thursday, June 25, we open the doors of the Malt AIR studios and invite you to explore the artists’ work up close. This is a great chance to meet the artists in a relaxed and informal setting, over drinks and snacks.

📷New works from Katharina Fitz
Katharina has transformed her studio into a material laboratory, experimenting with clay, latex, cotton, paper, steel, and found objects.

Looking closely at Katharina's works, you can see how she folded, bent, rolled, threw, and compressed the materials, over and over and over again. While exploring her studio, we invite you to consider the ways we repeatedly touch, use, and exert force on everyday objects. How do our bodies relate to our built environments? And how can materials offer a more visceral, tactile way of looking at the world?

The Malt AIR studios are located at Maltvej 4, 8400 Ebeltoft.
Come and go anytime between 4-6pm, everyone is welcome!

Malt AIR Open Studios - June 25, 4-6pm

Next Thursday we invite you into the artist studios at Maltfabrikken, to meet our artists-in-residence and see their work firsthand.

📷New works from Soumya Sankar Bose

In his studio, Soumya will present the final chapter of his book project, We Need to Talk in Whispers.

This chapter follows Alfred, whose life was shaped by the aftermath of the Second World War. As a young man, he took part in the White Buses operation that helped transport prisoners from Nazi concentration camps to safety in Scandinavia. He later underwent psychiatric treatment in Aarhus, worked in factories, and became a father. Over time, schizophrenia and recurring delusions led to repeated hospitalizations, and he eventually died by suicide. Drawing on archival research, medical records, and personal writings, the chapter reconstructs a life marked by war, mental illness, and survival.

During the studio visit, Soumya will present selected works from his practice and speak about the development of We Need to Talk in Whispers, sharing how research and archival materials are transformed into visual narratives.

The Malt AIR studios are located at Maltvej 4, 8400 Ebeltoft.
Come anytime between 4-6pm, everyone is welcome!

Today, Malt AIR artist-in-residence Katharina Fitz visited the ceramicist Mariko Wada in her studio in Aarhus. Over two hours, the artists learned about each other's work and artistic processes - how they work with materials, how they build their work lives, and how this differs across cultural contexts.

Studio visits are a huge focus for us at Malt AIR. These kinds of exchanges can give ideas and inspiration, shed light on different perspectives, and help shape artistic research.

Thank you to Mariko Wada, and all the other artists who have hosted Malt AIR artists!

Malt AIR will open our studios on June 25, 4-6pm

How do we respond to a new environment, without knowing what will come out of it? This is the guiding question for Katharina Fitz, the Austrian-born, UK-based sculptor currently in residence at Malt AIR.

Known for raw, process-forward installations that respond to urban environments, Katharina is focusing her time in Ebeltoft on open-ended research and material experimentation. She is exploring not only Maltfabrikken’s distinctive architecture, but also the local harbour and beachfront, collecting both natural and industrial materials to bring back to her studio. This challenge of sitting with uncertainty, and thinking through making, opens exciting new possibilities for artistic practice.

📌 New date: ARTIST TALK w. Soumya Sanker Bose (IND) Thursday the 18th of June 2026

We’re excited to welcome international artist and photographer @soumyasankarbose currently in residency at MALT AiR in Ebeltoft, for an evening at FotoGrafisk Værksted that opens the door into his expanding and haunting photographic world.

👀 What to expect:
Soumya Sankar Bose works with photography, text, video, and archival material to explore loss, vulnerability, and the stories that linger long after events have passed.
His work re-imagines memory and imagination, blurring together fact and fiction.

🌘 During the talk, Bose will share how his projects unfold: how a found diary becomes a map of psychological terrain; how archival traces turn into images; how places hold onto the echoes of those who once moved through them. His practice invites us to listen closely to the whispers, to the absences, to the fragile seams between fact and imagination.

📚 If you’re drawn to photobooks, expanded storytelling, and photography that asks difficult questions and lingers in the shadows of memory, this is an artist talk you won’t want to miss.

Come be part of the conversation.
Come see how an artist rebuilds a world through expanded photography from deep research, archival fragments, family narratives, and oral stories.

✏️ Sign up through our e-mail at fotografiskvaerksted@gmail.com
