Bartsch’s sculptures Agave l-lll, 2021, engage with exceptional life cycle of the Agave americana commonly known as the „Century Plant“. Native to Central and South America, this plant produces flowering stalks that can reach up to eight meters in height, blooming only ones in its lifetime, typically after 10 to 30 years, before dying. In these works, Bartsch memorializes this transitory moment by casting the agave flower in aluminum, a material renowned for its industrial durability and permanence.

Europa (Jupiter 2), 2024, Triton, 2021, and Oberon, 2021 belong to a series by Bartsch that examines the more than 200 moons discovered within the solar system. These moons exist within a complex, yet still inadequately understood, gravitational equilibrium that is integral to the stability of life on Earth. The digitally painted moons are depicted in barely perceptible rotational movements around their axes, with their rotational speeds mirroring the actual velocities of their counterparts in space.

The solo show „T.I.N.A.“ by Malte Bartsch is now on view till 06.12.24.

(…) Malte Bartsch picks up the theme of fire in two works in the exhibition: the glass sculptures Soft Landing (Eternal Flame) (2024), whose forms resemble flames, and the cast aluminum sculpture Macchina del fuoco artificiale (2024). The „machine of artificial fire“ is inspired by fireworks and market-driven logics. The artist connects these two seemingly different
contexts through their shared trait of „creative destruction“: creation and destruction condition each other in an endless cycle. The base of the sculpture recalls a fragment of a Baroque building, referring to the 18th-century practice at European courts of constructing elaborate backdrops for fireworks displays (which often caught fire during the spectacle,
whether intentionally or as collateral damage remains unclear). These fireworks were part of grand parades celebrating the king, entertaining the population, and likely also serving to stabilize existing power structures. Yet, they could not prevent the upheaval of the French Revolution. In the upper part of the sculpture, figures in business suits can be seen riding
locusts. This locust metaphor refers to corporations that buy up companies, saddle them with debt, and often dismantle them to meet short-term and excessive profit expectations.

The fireworks depicted in Bartsch’s sculpture, unlike those of the 18th-century aristocracy, are on the side of the people, hinting that an economic logic ased on profit maximization and progress for the few is about to go up in flames. And, as many a phoenix has risen from the ashes, we might hope that something new and better will emerge from this destruction (…)

25.10.-06.12.2024

Opening 25.10. | 6-10 pm

KALI Gallery presents ‘T.I.N.A.’, the first solo exhibition at KALI by German artist Malte Bartsch (*1984/Braunschweig, lives and works in Berlin), who uses a variety of materials to scrutinise both the fragility and durability of natural and constructed systems.

Guided by contrasts, machines, objects and photographs enter into a dialogue with people. The resulting spaces for reflection create a confrontation that is contradictory, dysfunctional and playful in the best sense of the word.

Something universally symbolic is transformed into something mass-produced that is visually connected to nature and stands in contrast to industrial and artificial materials. Nature here could serve as a reminder of what is overlooked or sacrificed in established systems, reflecting a longing for alternatives that lead us to something immediate and untouched.
