10th December 1992. Thomas Banyacya, a senior of the Hopi nation, comes to the podium at the UN General Assembly and sprinkles cornmeal on the floor beside it. A greeting. An offering. The very first thing he does in the Great House of Mica is to feed it.

His people had described that house of glass generation upon generation before it was actually built. It was to be a place where the nations would come together to end war without weapons. He’d carried that message since 1948. When he finally spoke, the hall was virtually empty.

He told the handful that remained that three worlds had already come to an end (by earthquake, by ice and by flood) and each time it was because of man’s greed and his failure to heed the land. He pointed to the floods and storms of that year and to the whales beaching themselves as the same message coming through again. Then he produced the petroglyph from Prophecy Rock in Arizona. Two paths. One is technology with no moral law at all, and it just breaks into jagged lines and stops. The other is the path that stays with the land and keeps on going.

COP31 opens in Antalya in eight days’ time. 100,000 people. Full house this time. The same question I had from Banyacya, who left that cornmeal on the floor: are the people who have the knowledge in the room, or are they outside the fence?

In Kenya, that knowledge is in the coral and lime walls of Lamu and in the red soil, which we read as data at DNA Lab. It wasn’t lost. The people who nobody ever invited to the podium held it.

Wabuni is made in the room: through conversation, unexpected introductions, shared attention and the quiet beginnings of new ideas and connections that birth collaborations.

Our August gathering brought together people who are creating, designing, inventing and imagining - and reminding us that community is not something we proclaim like rhetoric. It is something we build, one event at a time, encounter by encounter.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening what it was.

WABUNI FIRST WEDNESDAY #5
Omar Degan.

A fireside dialogue on the future of African architecture, with one of the people building it. Omar Degan is an Italian-born architect, curator, and academic of Somali heritage a global expert on architecture in fragile contexts. He is the founder and principal of DO Architecture Group, the first internationally recognised architecture practice from Somalia, working across humanitarian design and cultural reconstruction from Africa to Europe, the Americas, and Asia. A 2022 Obama Foundation Leader, his work has been featured in The New York Times, BBC World, Dezeen, and Wallpaper.

He is also the founder and curator of the Pan-African Biennale, opening in Nairobi on 1 September 2026 the first continental architecture biennale of its kind. Under the theme "Shifting the Center: From Fragility to Resilience," it brings architects, scholars and researchers from across the continent to reframe African cities not as sites of deficit, but as sources of knowledge for the world.

This is a rare Nairobi sitting with the man building the continent's first platform for architecture told on its own terms.

One evening. 40 seats. No livestream.
KES 3,000.
For architects, designers, urbanists, and anyone building Nairobi's next decade.
Sisi ni Wabuni.

As I stand with the echoes of our conversations still warm in my heart, I feel a deep need to say asante sana.

For decades, my work has walked the line between the social and the built environment, the mtaa corners where elders once arbitrated under a tree, the public squares our youth reimagine with chalk and courage, the markets, libraries and housing courts that either welcome or wound. I have always believed that these spaces are not just concrete and policy; they are safes where a society stores value for generations it will never meet.

In this season of deepening our democracy and breathing life into our constitutional-making processes, I am grateful beyond words for the wazee who refused to let memory be buried, and for the vijana who brought their restless, hopeful fire to the table. You reminded Kenya that participatory rights are not abstract clauses. For the senior citizen, it is the right to have the bench under the mugumo tree counted as sacred public infrastructure. For the youth, it is the right to redesign the abandoned boma into a digital innovation hub without losing its ancestral soul.

You taught me again that a constitution lives only if it is co-authored by the feet that know the dust of our alleys and the dreams that sketch tomorrow’s skyline. Thank you for insisting that we save not just buildings, but belonging. That we hand over a democracy that has shade, steps, and songs for every age.

Asante, from a heart still learning to build across time.

Three brands. One weekend. One Nairobi.

@mamboheritage - settlement, cultural intelligence, and the kind of innovation that starts from where you stand. @demba_clothing - workwear pulled apart and stitched back into something with a second story. @fam_l1.2s_l36.4e - food, art, music. A room built for listening.

This is what it looks like when the city builds from its own raw material cloth, sound, soil, story. No imports of identity required.

Asante to everyone who came through, tried something on, sat down, and stayed for the second plate. The conversations are the work.

More of this, soon.

Hisi Tano | Five Senses - An Open Biophilic Design Commons A Forkable Materials Register for Community-Led Construction in Lake Victoria Ecologies and Beyond.

Biophilic design is not a recent invention from laboratories; it has deep roots in traditional building practices.
African builders have practised it for generations: earth walls that release the scent of rain, lemongrass planted at thresholds for arrival by fragrance, courtyard trees chosen for shade, sound, and food in one canopy.
In these traditions, every sense is engaged. Every material is local. Every decision is rooted in ecology, not aesthetics alone.

Biophilic design, therefore, is not an innovation; it is a return to indigenous wisdom already embedded in our environments through generations.
The soil already knew.

🏆 Big win! Nairobi is leading the way—and the region is taking notice! 🎉

Our Public Utilities and Service Delivery session, hosted in collaboration with KCF’s Quarterly Service Delivery session, has been featured by the East Africa Philanthropy Network (EAPN)! The spotlight celebrates Leadership Nairobi’s work with local government duty bearers, using dialogue, evidence, and trust-building to transform civic–government relations.

This recognition belongs to our amazing LN alumni and current cohort members, who are turning governance theory into action and demonstrating a replicable approach that can be adapted across wards, counties, and countries.

Why this matters:
This external validation confirms that the “Architects of Reform” approach isn’t just a program—it’s a regional movement for accountability and the Rule of Law. By starting with relationships, evidence, and structured dialogue, we’re showing how meaningful civic–government collaboration can actually happen, setting a blueprint for other cities and countries.

💫 A proud moment for the Leadership Nairobi program—shaping the future of civic leadership in East Africa!
