Being Josh’s wife is waking up to a cup of coffee on my nightstand. It’s getting into my car with a surprise full tank of gas. It’s never doing my own returns because it was on his way (it wasn’t, but he made it that way). It’s getting a text with a Spotify link to a song that he thinks I’d like… and he’s right, I really do. Being Josh’s wife is calling me outside to see the sunset because it’s that one blend of orange and pink that he knows I love. It’s one perfectly timed movie quote everyday… the man is a cinematic encyclopedia. It’s receiving kindness even though I’m being an absolute ass. It’s pulling in the driveway to him and Georgie on the porch, ā€œjust waiting for mom to get home.ā€ It’s a reminder to schedule my dentist appointment… and then a text that he went ahead and scheduled my dentist appointment. Being Josh’s wife is knowing what it feels like to not have to fight to be someone’s priority. It’s being known and understood. It’s being accepted as is and encouraged to keep growing and changing, too. Being Josh’s wife is my joy, my treasure, my divine dumb luck, my gift. Cheers to 14 šŸ¤Ž taken in Ohio by @mandaraines

August is here and so is flooring! After weeks of ripping out thousands of floor staples and then another week of rest due to tendinitis from ripping out said staples, we have officially completed all demo at Pine Hollow.

Things tend to pick up speed from here. Trim, plumbing fixtures and bathroom vanities, kitchen appliances and lighting… we are getting so close to move in.

Something tells me it’s going to be a pretty special Fall around here. 🪜 šŸ”Ø 🪟

This morning I opened my journal to a flood of anxious thoughts.

My burdens were swirling faster than my hand could write, and instead of the usual peace that comes from processing them, they began to feel like a crushing weight.

Then I felt a quiet nudge: Make a gratitude list.

I turned the page and started my sentences differently.

Thank You for the wind chimes.
Thank You for hot coffee.
Thank You for last night’s restful sleep.

I let the list keep flowing, and with every line, gratitude grew wider than what was weighing me down.

I filled two pages with things I’m thankful for. The burdens I carried didn’t disappear—but they felt so much smaller beside all the good I’ve also been given to hold.

One of my favorite hymns says,

ā€œTurn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face;
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.ā€

Scripture promises a peace that surpasses understanding when we share our fears with Heaven. Today, that promise met me on the porch. It truly wasn’t my idea to make a gratitude list… I brought my burdens to share and Yahweh guided me to gratitude. To take inventory of all the ways He has cared for me so that I could remember: He will take care of me yet.

This Sunday, I am praying your burdens grow strangely dim, too. šŸ•Æļø taken in Ohio by @mandaraines

The clock struck 35 for me today, and for just a moment, it all went quiet.

I thought about middle child Amanda and how much I loved sharing a birthday cake with my big sister and big hero, Abbey — born two years and two days apart. I thought about sweet sixteen Amanda… God, I felt beautiful in my party dress. Thanks for making that rite of passage so perfect, momma. I thought about newly married Amanda, when dinners out were few and far between but we scraped it together to share a burger at The Pub. Best meal of the year, at that table for two.

And then, I thought about mid-thirties Amanda. Close family and forever friends. Work that has joy and meaning. A deep, tested faith threading through it all. And I wished for a moment that I could share a secret with those younger Amandas: if you let them, the candles will glow brighter every year. You will need positivity and perseverance; life’s line is hardly straight. Some years make us happy, and others make us strong. But the evidence all around me gently nudges toward the same thing: if you keep showing up for your one wonderful life, the light will keep growing… one candle at a time.

My grandma had this note pinned to her kitchen curtains.

She wrote it for herself in the wake of my grandfather’s passing, when she was finding her way through that first darkness of grief—learning how to live in a world where your light had suddenly gone out.

The note lived above the sink, where your mind wanders while preparing a meal or washing the dishes. I loved that little piece of paper, held up with a pin and covered in Grandma’s neat handwriting. It always looked like she’d just put it there, but it stayed for the next ten years.

Four years ago today, we said goodbye to Grandma. I think about her and that note often.

We all have chapters of our story we never would have written for ourselves. One of many life lessons Grandma taught me is that faith isn’t pretending to understand them. It’s trusting that God is still writing something good, even when you can’t yet see the next page.

Thinking of you, Virginia Ellen. 🪽 by @mandaraines

Our sweet Nan was called home to Heaven this week, just shy of her 98th birthday.

I remember the day I met Nan — I was nineteen, nervous, and head over heels in love with her grandson. Her love of family was the kind so big that you felt like there had always been a chair for you at her table, she was just waiting for you to arrive.

Gloria Elizabeth was the oldest of five daughters, worked the A and B boards at the telephone company in Manhattan, and met the love of her life as Maid of Honor at her sister Molly’s wedding — she wore the same wedding dress six months later when she married the best man… who also happened to be the groom’s brother. Sisters who married brothers, they took on life’s seasons the best way any of us can hope to: together. Raising babies, enjoying friendships, and always sharing the bottle of wine, the fresh coffee pot, unending stories and unsolicited skincare advice. The two oils of life will see you through: olive oil, and oil of Olay.

Nan was a devoted wife, steadfast sister, and master of motherhood. Her connection to her sisters and the bond they shared will live on in her own daughters, Anna and my mother in law, Lisa. She treasured her family, and we treasured her.

Nan’s memory may have faded in the later years of her life, but her faith did not. She was a follower of Jesus, emulating fruits of the Spirit like love, joy, patience and goodness so effortlessly. She was also just plain fun. Always up for a laugh, a friendly competition of Yahtzee, and a post-dinner Entemann’s coffee cake.

I was honored to be alongside my mother in law in Nan’s final days, bearing witness and holding her hands during a peaceful passing into Heaven’s arms. God keeps meeting us in our grief and bringing us a profound gratitude to have been loved by her. Life is a gift, and her memory will ever be a blessing. Until we meet again, sweet Nan.

DEMO CONTINUES — with the Kitchen šŸ› ļø

This is the most layered portion of our renovation. The bones of the house are so good, but it felt like a reconfiguration of the kitchen would open up the flow and let us maximize the square footage.

Originally, the kitchen had both an island and peninsula, as well as eat-in space off on end and dining space off the other. A tall pantry closet hindered sight lines and the oven/cooktop in the island seemed like a safety hazard.

Our kitchen plan is to:
šŸ› ļø remove the peninsula and pantry closet
šŸ“ expand the island
šŸ‘‰šŸ½ relocate cooktop to wall; stack oven and microwave
ā˜•ļø convert eat-in kitchen to morning room/office

Demo is nearly done (just a few thousand floor staples to go šŸ™ƒ) and framing is in. Electrical and plumbing are being rerouted over the next few days, and then we will be ready for drywall work.
