The men in our communities need to be having urgent talks with boys about what happened at Cornell. They need to tell the truth about all of the failures and they need to make clear what is expected of them. To neglect to have this urgent discussion is akin to the moral failure of the Cornell men who received that message and did nothing.

PS. Spare me and everyone else the conspiracy issues about Oprah. (And while you’re at it, go run them thru fact checker too.) She is an imperfect human, but more importantly, she is a powerful woman and the patriarchy will stop at nothing to make us doubt and hate women with a big voice.

I try to keep things simple for parents as to not overwhelm. This rule is by far the best boundary to help protect your child. But it is not foolproof nor a guarantee. There are many people, myself included, who have been violated with other people in the room. But when it comes to opportunity reduction, this does a lot of heavy lifting.

There are real child predators all around us. And child and human trafficking is a real thing. Do not allow the fear mongering to blind you to the real risks. The real risk is not going to look so scary. It’s going to look promising, and then it’s going to seek to isolate.

There is so much unearned trust that parents put in schools, camps, and programs for kids simply because they are designed for kids. I don’t wish to cause paranoia, but I do want to instill a strong skepticism in places that cater to children. Because that is where predators flock.
