The Evolution of Ingqayi. Pt 1
Rooted in Xhosa material culture, this sculptural interpretation of Ingqayi explores cultural continuity through contemporary form. Drawing from indigenous materials, symbolism and ways of living, the work considers how inherited traditions can evolve while retaining their cultural significance. It reflects my ongoing interest in preserving cultural knowledge through contemporary art and design, allowing heritage to remain relevant across generations. by @mandisi.maboee

The Reverency looks to the decorative drawings, imperfect forms, textures and materiality found within African architecture, materials & techniques as a source of contemporary design.

Patterns painted onto walls, the irregularity of handmade structures, natural materials and the quiet details of everyday spaces are observed, interpreted and transformed into ceramics, fragrance, grooming objects, packaging, textiles and homeware.

The intention is to translate their visual and material language into contemporary objects, creating new ways for cultural references to be seen, experienced and carried forward.

A practice of cultural presentation and continuity, where what is inherited becomes something that can continue to live within the contemporary home.

Designer and artist @mandisi.maboee created ‘Cups of Reverence’ for @the.reverency

These sculptural vessels take inspiration from Ingqayi, the traditional African drinking vessel used for umqombothi. Maboee reimagines the familiar form at a hand-sized scale, abstracting its handle and turning something ‘rooted in ritual and gathering’ into something distinctly contemporary.

As Maboee puts it: “These vessels draw a sentimental and symbolic connection to Ingqayi.”

Cups of Reverence sit between object and sculpture, function and form, carrying the memory of a traditional vessel without simply reproducing it.

Heritage Day is everyday. 🤎

At the Cape Town City Library, I stumbled across a number of books on African heritage, materiality and ways of living, selling for just R10. They looked almost desperate to be bought.

It reminded me of the strange relationship we have with our heritage. Every Heritage Day, we dive deep into our photo archives, posting images of ourselves dressed in traditional clothing and engaging with cultural practices. For one day, our heritage becomes a spectacle.

But beyond the spectacle is something far more valuable: generational wealth, knowledge, identity and memory.

What if we approached heritage not as an annual event to perform, but as something to preserve, study, live with and pass on?

These books, sitting quietly on a shelf for R10, felt like a reminder that our heritage is invaluable, yet we often overlook it when there isn’t an occasion to celebrate it.

Heritage is not a date on the calendar.
It is what we preserve, what we read, what we make, what we remember and what we choose to carry forward.
