What happens when heritage is reimagined?

In his new body of work, @mandisi.maboee explores cultural continuity through contemporary African art and design, beginning with the Xhosa Ingqayi: a traditional sculptural vessel associated with umqombothi.

Rather than replicating the form, Mandisi transforms it, elevates it and rebuilds it through a contemporary sculptural language. Indigenous references remain central: ikhukho straw fibres, wooden and glass beads, marble and material influences drawn from Xhosa, Ndebele, Zulu and Swati cultures.

Even the surface speaks to the vessel’s original purpose. A foaming underglaze references the movement of umqombothi during fermentation, a visual response that, within Xhosa cultural understanding, can carry associations of ancestral presence, response and blessing.

It is a conversation between what is inherited and what is imagined.

Designer and artist @mandisi.maboee created ‘Cups of Reverence’ for @the.reverency

These sculptural vessels take inspiration from Ingqayi, the traditional African drinking vessel used for umqombothi. Maboee reimagines the familiar form at a hand-sized scale, abstracting its handle and turning something ‘rooted in ritual and gathering’ into something distinctly contemporary.

As Maboee puts it: “These vessels draw a sentimental and symbolic connection to Ingqayi.”

Cups of Reverence sit between object and sculpture, function and form, carrying the memory of a traditional vessel without simply reproducing it.

The Reverency looks to the decorative drawings, imperfect forms, textures and materiality found within African architecture, materials & techniques as a source of contemporary design.

Patterns painted onto walls, the irregularity of handmade structures, natural materials and the quiet details of everyday spaces are observed, interpreted and transformed into ceramics, fragrance, grooming objects, packaging, textiles and homeware.

The intention is to translate their visual and material language into contemporary objects, creating new ways for cultural references to be seen, experienced and carried forward.

A practice of cultural presentation and continuity, where what is inherited becomes something that can continue to live within the contemporary home.

Rooted in what came before. Reimagined for what comes next.
