Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, in my view, is Moshe Safdie’s best work. It was completed in 2012 and recently expanded. The elegant siting takes full advantage of the sloped, forested site to create a series of pavilion “bridges” connecting galleries. The collection is as remarkable as the building and features a who’s who of American art. Certainly worth a visit. taken in Bentonville, Arkansas by @mankinsarch

Thanks to Ati and Marlon Blackwell for providing a great tour of the Heartland Whole Health Institute to my Integrated Design Studio (ARCH 4010) from Iowa State University. A truly inspirational building explained to us by two inspirational architects. It was a memorable experience. taken in Bentonville, Arkansas by @mankinsarch

Alvar and Elissa Aalto’s Experimental House, designed and built between 1952 and 1954, is, as the name implies, an experiment. The summer home and studio provided a respite for the couple to relax, recharge, and investigate materials. The house provides two sides to a defined court. One side is largely open, framing a view of Lake Paijanne. taken in Jyväskylä, Finland by @mankinsarch

The Sauna at Alvar and Elissa Aalto’s Experimental House on the shore of Lake Paijanne near Saynatsalo, Finland. When completed in 1952, the densely forested site was accessible only by boat. The beautiful setting was the site for the Aaltos summer home and studio. Finnish cultural priorities led to this sauna being completed first. I can imagine the couple arriving by boat, camping on the site, and relaxing in this simple sauna at the end of a long journey from Helsinki. The view alone would have made the trip worthwhile. taken in Jyväskylä, Finland by @mankinsarch

Lahti Town Hall designed by Eliel Saarinen in 1911 and completed in 1912 is an example of his highly accomplished work in Finland. This work includes furniture and other decorative arts designed by Saarinen as well. It is a clear example of his early work and serves as a harbinger for the buildings and spaces he would complete in the US decades later. taken in Lahti, Finland by @mankinsarch

The Tapiola Urn Cemetery in Espoo, Finland by Lahdelma & Mahlamaki Architects is a competition winning entry from 1997. The peaceful setting among an existing stand of trees is quiet and, appropriately, restful. It is one of Finland’s first cemeteries created solely for urns. It is simultaneously new and ancient - respecting longstanding burial traditions. It is moving to visit. taken in Espoo, Finland by @mankinsarch

The Otaniemi Library at Aalto University designed by Alvar and Elissa Aalto in 1964-68 and completed in 1969 is an example of Aalto’s masterful use of daylight. The spaces glow during the day and the clerestory serves as a beacon at night. It is a simple space shaped by light. Inspiring. taken in Espoo, Finland by @mankinsarch

The Undergraduate Center at Aalto University (formerly the University of Technology) on the Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland was designed by Alvar and Elissa Aalto in 1953-55. The public spaces, particularly the lecture halls, remain inspiring. The building occupies the core of a series of Aalto buildings built over a decade between 1964 and 1974. taken in Espoo, Finland by @mankinsarch

Details from Studio Aalto in Helsinki, Finland designed in 1955-56 after the firm outgrew the Aalto House. Simple, prosaic items like a garage door, entry (with bench), service entry, fence, and backyard (as amphitheater) all elevate the ordinary with purposeful design. The building is beautiful, but these little decisions add up to create something special. taken in Munkkiniemi, Helsinki by @mankinsarch

Aalto House designed by Aino and Alvar Aalto in 1936 served as both their home and studio. A visit provides a glimpse into a true design partnership resulting in the design of furnishings, lighting, glassware, and architecture- all of which I truly admire. It predates the Eames House by more than a decade. by @mankinsarch

Oodi/Helsinki Public Library - a competition winning scheme by ALA Architects is an incredibly active and heavily used facility in central Helsinki that expands our understanding of what a public library can be. It includes music studios (with instruments for check-out) and a playground. A true public resource for the citizens of Finland. Remarkable. by @mankinsarch
