Congratulations to the Paul and Lynn Mankins Rome Studio Prize - 1st Place team! 'Planted' Students: Adrianna Mattsson, Grace Morhardt, Meredith Petellin Professors: Consuelo Nuñez Ciuffa, Matilde Mellini, & Lavinia Minciacchi Description: Planted is a project of resistance, calling attention to marginalized communities. It moves residents and visitors from familiar tourist landscapes into a place of access and care. Planted becomes the connection between the Monti neighborhood and Via Dei Fori Imperiali, uniting spaces separated by history. As migrants and asylum seekers in Rome face immediate risks, we offer protection and support through emergency shelter, medical care, housing, employment, and legal guidance. The project is planted into the landscape, becoming a bridge between cultures. As intimacy is born from the art of the void, something rooted rises from the soil. ARCH 4020 SPRING 2026

Congratulations to the Paul and Lynn Mankins Rome Studio Prize - 2nd Place team! 'Collina Viva' Students: Ava Eisenbarth, Lindsay Hoag, Rachel Koster Professors: Consuelo Nunez Ciuffa, Matilde Mellini, & Lavinia Minciacchi Description: “Collina Viva” proposes a model of urban housing in the city of Roma where domestic life and public space are interwoven. The project is developed for a community of women at the intersection of career, independence, and motherhood, offering a space of collective support and belonging. Formally, the building is embedded within the topography, allowing the architecture to remain partially concealed while opening toward the Monte neighborhood and restoring the layering of the Palazzo Rivaldi site, which was once a hillside. Above, an active green space allows for movement, exploration, and community, reshaping the relationship between built form and public space. Beneath the topography, housing is a network of shared space, and public program includes an event space for professional events. “Collina Viva” forms an environment that allows women to inhabit both professional and domestic roles while inviting community engagement, bridging private and communal life in the historic urban fabric.
