Always gotta edit this… “SERVICE DOG PROSPECT” in the video means IN TRAINING. Prospect is FUTURE. Not current.

I had shared part 3 of that series but in true social media fashion, the algorithm didn’t push out that one. It only pushed out the problem one 🙈 so here’s this and one more that will be shared soon. It’s been sitting in my drafts.

Since this outing, we’ve started training classes and if this happens again, we don’t just sit and watch. We keep moving and walking, and we come back. If she barks, our rule is to walk away and create distance with movement. Movement lowers the tension - which is probably why going off and walking and coming back around helped!

Also… I apparently need to put a PSA on all my posts from now on explaining that a service dog for psychiatric help is a real service dog and NOT the same as an emotional support animal. Service dogs have real tasks that help with disabilities. This is year 2026, I can’t believe we are still having that fight that mental illness is a real thing.

9 weeks old VS 22 weeks old 🥺🥺🥺

Before we got Maple, I was obsessively looking through all kinds of videos of golden retriever puppies growing up. I could see photos of what she looked like at the time, but I couldn’t picture what she might look like grown up.

While I’ve had puppies before, and I’ve had over 20 dogs in my lifetime, I’ve never had a dog for the full extent of its life starting at 8 weeks. This is the first time we ever done this.

I know I might look like a weirdo for saying this but, I daydreamed about this for so long 🥹 What I love more than anything about sharing our journey here, is that I have so much footage of her growing up. I’ve really soaked it all in and enjoyed every second of it 🩷

We have an area in our neighborhood that decorates all out for all the holidays. One day this past week we attempted to take Maple. She had done horrible with a Frankenstein animatronic down our street, however… it was just a solo Frankenstein standing by itself.

I had NO CLUE how she would do going to this place. And I was totally shocked and surprised how she handled it! This area also had the same Frankenstein, and she didn’t react at all the same way.

This is the part of self training that is just SO rewarding 🥹 while we have to work through a lot of struggles, seeing the wins is just next level!!

And yes, she’s 6 months old she is no where near perfect. Her leash walking does need help BUT I’m also allowing her to explore. This trip we had a harness and a 15 foot lead so she could move as she felt she needed. But I was shocked to see she chose to be by me the way she did and engaged. Because she didn’t have to! The only thing I prevented her from doing was walking on anything that could ruin their set up.

She also did this for the rest of the time there but my dumb thumb hit record twice (it stopped recording) so I didn’t even get the footage 🙈

A few days ago I shared what goes into my treat bag for Maple’s training sessions, and I wanted to give a little update on a new product we’ve been trying!

@smallbatchpets kindly sent us their new freeze-dried raw Rabbit Small Bites to try, with no obligation to share.

The verdict? The bag is almost EMPTY 🙈

We’ve been using these as training rewards at home and during outings, and Maple is clearly a fan. I already know we’ll be buying more!

Watch me make bully sticks out of 🐐🍆

I made this a while ago, and I’ve since stored them in the fridge and freezer. I did make a boo boo, I didn’t trim off the extra tissue or fat and I just left it on. So that just means I’m taking extra precautions in preserving it so it doesn’t go bad.

I increased the time in the dehydrator for quite a while. The thicker pieces stayed in for 30 hours. But it didn’t change in texture so I moved on.

Yall, even though I take on a lot of projects, I’m also lazy okay 😆 even in art school, I was more chaotic and all over the place because I move at a fast pace. I ain’t got no time or patience 😅 so next time I’ll actually trim off the extra tissue.

They turned out great! I want to try cow pizzle next time. Hoping @rawfeedingmiami goes back in stock soon! Been getting the itch to place another order!

Goat pizzle was from @rawfeedingmiami they are literally the best! They had a video on their page that inspired me to try this on my own.

Most of the time it’s worth it. Every single positive comment makes it worth it. Every piece of advice I’ve received has been worth it.

But I definitely showed up naïve here because I had no clue there was so much hate here.

It’s worth it… if you’re strong enough. Some days I am, some days I’m not.

My earliest childhood memory of having a dog is not what you might expect. He was a Samoyed type breed and had shown aggression early on. I spent my whole childhood watching this dog live on the other side of a fence. We weren’t allowed to go in there or pet him because my Dad said he was dangerous. My only memory of interacting with Bear was feeding him a hot dog through the fence because I felt bad and I hated seeing him like that.

Growing up on a farm is a different lifestyle, that if you didn’t experience it you wouldn’t understand. Animals were just animals. Leaving pets to be outside was normal. Even caging pets in small pens was normal. But the story that my childhood self took on, was this hurts. This hurts to watch and experience, and it didn’t feel fair.

Fast forward to now. Maple is like the 25th dog I’ve ever had. I used to say that number with pride, like I knew dogs because I’ve been around them my whole life. And lately I’ve been reflecting on it.

Most of those dogs weren’t actually mine. I was not the main adult who could care and make decisions for them. Most of those dogs were strays that came and went… either I saved them and re-homed them (without realizing it) or they died in a sudden way.

And I’ve realized something.

Maple is the first dog I’ve intentionally brought into my life as an adult… not one taken in from someone else to rehome, and not one from a shelter (Jake wasn’t supposed to be my dog, but it ended up that way). She’s our first one chosen with intention and purpose.

So often my husband and I will look at each other and stare at each other… is this a dream??? We found something we didn’t even know we were searching for. A new meaning, a new purpose, and a love we never saw coming 🩷 We get to fulfill her life just as much as her existence fulfills ours.

It’s wild to think that giving our dogs a life filled with experiences, joy, and purpose is something neither of us grew up knowing. And sometimes we sit with regret on things we didn’t do with Jake before he got too old.

To my younger self watching Bear on the other side of the fence, you would be so proud right now. 💗 by @maple.in.the.making
