Hartley & I were so happy to have a puppy-play date & training visit with @maple.in.the.making earlier this week!

Hartley needs more exposure around other dogs, both in regard to maintaining his composure on-leash & also having the opportunity to have fun & play off-leash!

Maple was a wonderful example on how to maintain composure on-leash & they also had a fabulous time playing together off-leash in my apartment’s fenced “puppy park” which they had all to themselves!

Grateful to Lawren & Maple for our meet-up! Hartley, a 6 year old apricot Labradoodle sits on bright green turf beside Maple, a 6 month old Golden Retriever. Both dogs are sitting while on leash & smiling big into the camera.

If you’ve seen our recent stories, you know that Toast HATES nail trims. We have tried so many different things and have been working on this since we got here at 8 weeks old. So we asked for your help! And you guys came through big time!!!🥹
So we thought we’d put together some of the most recommended ideas and some of the most unique ones!
We also wanted to show everyone that it is way more common that we think. When you’re the one dealing with this, it can be easy to feel alone in it. It can feel like you’re “failing” or doing something wrong. But you’re not. You’re not alone and you’re not failing! Every dog is different! And every dog trains and learns differently. We just have to keep trying!

I’d love to hear any other ideas you guys have!! 🫶 or what has been working for you!

Having neutral meetings (or uneventful non-meetings) is crucial! We’ve only ever had reactive rescue dogs and this time we want it to be different. We want to start as soon as possible desensitizing to the outside environment. This isn’t just beneficial for a service dog prospect, but for any dog that we want to be well trained and enjoying life with us outside of our home.

Also, I still can’t believe Jake is still playing this hard!! Although he’s definitely crossing that age where you can tell he’s getting old, all the signs are there. (Even sitting at the vet right now typing this for his wellness check up). The cattle dog in him Does. Not. Stop. So happy I was introduced to the long lead so we can have more space. Maple is learning recall but old man Jake will never get there 🥲

Anyone who has known me for a long time won’t be surprised by this. We’ve used homeopathy pretty intensely for the last decade, sometimes even solely. We’ve experienced some incredible things with it and it even saved my dog from HGE 7 years ago.

When we knew we were finally getting a puppy, my research began. Our breeder sent us a 70 page document with SO much info in it over many topics pertaining to goldens. I learned a lot, and I continue to learn every day.

One topic I knew I’d dive into was puppy shots. I learned that puppies have maternal antibodies up to 20 weeks old, though they often fade out between 8-16 weeks. The reason puppy shots are given in multiple rounds is because we don’t know when the maternal antibodies will wear off. If they haven’t yet, those first rounds won’t take.

So, we decided to wait. I considered Dodd’s protocol by waiting until 9 weeks. We met with one vet and she said although it’s risky, we could wait longer closer to when those antibodies wore off. And then we met our main vet who’s holistic (who we used for Sweets before she passed), and they offered me the option of order single shots online and have them shipped to her for proper storage. Then we would separate them out over her first year of life, and then run titers.

Instead of sitting at home waiting in fear, we found another option to hold us over until we make our decision. Homeopathic nosodes. The protocol was made by Dr. Will Falconer. He suggests this as a safe way to boost the immune system and prime it for protection.

I know this topic is majorly controversial, so I might delete this later if too many people attack me. But a part of me wants to share because there’s SO much information out there, and I want to show that there ARE options.

Annual shots, monthly meds, kibble fed, living indoors with LED lights and no sun… it takes a toll on our pets. It takes a toll on us! Feel free to pm me if you want any info on how to find nosodes or the single shots.

More detail in what our dogs currently eat. I love talking and sharing about this because it’s become way too normalized to feed our dogs kibble. When we switched my two dogs (Jake and Sweets) to raw back in 2020 they easily moved to a healthier weight, quit shedding as much, and didn’t poop as much either. We unfortunately lived in a house with mold and both my dogs started having liver issues. Sweets was switched to Just food for dogs and it was stupid expensive, so we had moved Jake to honest kitchen dehydrated food. I started getting labs done for Jake and we had to move him to lower fat as well, but I couldn’t afford it. We were already spending $500 a month for Sweets’s food and $200 for her meds. So Jake got demoted to kibble. Eventually Sweets passed at the ripe age of 15.

When we decided to get a golden retriever puppy, going back to feeding raw was a no brainer. The breed has high cancer rates and a double coat that I’m not used to. Better health and less shedding?? I’m all in 🙌🏼

I am by no means an expert, and I plan on taking a course on feeding raw in the very near future. But I didn’t want their health to keep waiting for my timeline.

The dog food brands in this video are @mytuckersraw @myperfectpet @rawdynamic all bought at @barknfetchfrisco where they have been incredibly helpful to me in this process.

The tinctures are @adoredbeastapothecary @venjenz and the nosode protocol is from @willfalconerdvm. (Side note: I have yet a third opinion apt from a holistic vet coming up, so none of what I’m doing isn’t without professional support)

**disclaimer, dogs CAN lose too much weight too fast so please observe when switching. Raw feeding calculators are just estimates, it’s important to look at your dog’s ribs and overall shape to make sure they stay in a healthy range.

When your puppy is too playful and not fed yet 🤣 training before eating is hard

We found out when our house was built they put our fence on top of our neighbors irrigation line 🫠 and their drain is on our side of the fence. So the warranty came out with landscaping company to fix it without warning. Maple has been struggling with staying neutral with other people since she’s had too many fun greetings. So we had her kibble portion of dinner here 🙌🏼

This is partially vulnerable for me to share because I always want to appear as if I have it all together, because everyone else seems to here. But I definitely don’t. I’m learning and making adjustments all the time, and then my perfectionism comes in and tells me “I told you so” 🤪🫠

And Because I know people will ask, yes she naps 🤣 a lot. Biting means we put her to sleep.
