In Dos à dos (1984), Chagall makes distance feel like another form of intimacy. Two figures stand back to back, yet they seem bound by the same invisible dream, as if love does not always need a face-to-face gaze to exist. At the end of life, Chagall was still painting what he had always painted: memory, longing, tenderness and the strange poetry of being human. Sometimes the people closest to us are not the ones we can hold, but the ones whose presence remains quietly beside us, even when they turn away. #MarcChagall #Chagall #artist #art by @marc.chagall_

In the hush of a red sun, a blue centaur breathes music into the air while a mother and child rise from violet flame Chagall’s 1957 vision where the beast becomes guardian, the house becomes temple, and every colour is a prayer that love outlives both myth and mortality.

Marc Chagall met Bella Rosenfeld in 1909, and she would become one of the most important figures in both his life and his art.

They married in 1915. In paintings such as The Birthday, The Promenade and Over the Town, the lovers appear weightless, floating above rooms, rooftops and entire cities. For Chagall, being in love was something that could almost defy gravity.

The bottom line of his work is the transformation of ordinary life through memory, imagination and emotion. Bella became a recurring presence in his visual world, appearing in his paintings even after her death in 1944.

Some people write love letters. Chagall painted an entire universe around the woman he loved.

Marc Chagall, Aleko and his Wife Zemphira from An Old Tale, 1955 a beautifully dreamlike work filled with vibrant colour, romance and poetic movement. Through his expressive use of colour and delicate forms, Chagall creates an enchanting scene that feels suspended between memory, imagination, and reality. A captivating example of the artist’s unique visual language and his ability to transform a narrative into something deeply emotional and timeless. Marc Chagall’s Half Past Three (The Poet) is less a portrait than a portrait of consciousness. Painted in Paris in 1911, it abandons ordinary perspective for the unstable logic of memory, desire and imagination. The fragmented body, intense blue forms and dreamlike objects create a world where time and identity seem to dissolve. Chagall turns the poet into a figure of inner life itself: fractured, restless and completely alive #MarcChagall #ModernArt #ArtHistory #Cubism taken in Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris by @marc.chagall_

Perhaps Chagall understood that the deepest form of love is not possession, but surrender, the quiet dissolution of the self into another person’s dream. In Peintre à la veste rouge et le nu vert, the two bodies seem to inhabit a realm where gravity, time and identity have lost their authority. They are not simply lovers, but fragments of one shared vision, suspended between earth and eternity, desire and memory, presence and absence. The invisible force binding them is more than affection. It is the mysterious recognition of a soul in another soul, a bond that cannot be explained, only felt. Here, colour becomes a language older than words, carrying what the heart cannot name, the longing to be seen completely, to disappear without being lost and to find, within another’s dream a place where existence becomes whole #MarcChagall #Chagall #ChagallArt #LoveInArt taken in MoMA The Museum of Modern Art by @marc.chagall_

The Juggler, 1943. Chagall turns life into a strange, beautiful dream where everything is suspended between joy and sorrow, love and loss, memory and reality. Nothing stands still, yet nothing truly falls. Perhaps that is what it means to be human: to keep balancing the fragile pieces of ourselves, carrying what we love through the chaos, pretending it is effortless #marcchagall #chagall #шагал #art by @marc.chagall_

Perhaps this is what happens when you love someone so deeply that even time cannot make them disappear. In 1980, decades after Bella was gone, Chagall was still painting himself beside her, somewhere above Paris, in that impossible blue world where the past could still breathe. He could no longer have her in his arms, but he could place her beside him on the canvas, exactly where she had always belonged. And maybe that is what his paintings remind us of: some people leave our lives, but they never leave the world we carry inside us 💙🪽#marcchagall #chagall #маркшагал #шагал taken in Paris, France by @marc.chagall_

Marc Chagall, Les Amoureux, 1928.

Perhaps love is simply this:
to find someone with whom the world disappears.

And for one impossible moment,
to feel weightless💙 #marcchagall #chagall #art #artist taken in Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris by @marc.chagall_
