✨ Visual material sourcing reimagined
👇🏻 Submissions open March Autumn Awards!
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
What if finding sustainable materials was as easy as watching your favorite series? 🎬

This is how MARCH began.

When Marie, an architect who experienced firsthand how hard it was to build sustainably, decided to rethink how materials are sourced.

After years of spending countless hours searching for responsible, beautiful, and affordable materials, she wanted to make it easier for every architect to do the same.

That idea became MARCH, a platform built to connect architects, materials, and makers, and to make sustainable construction the new normal.

Together with you, we’re turning that vision into reality. 💚

And stay tuned, we’ll soon be launching the full version of our platform. Exciting things are coming. ✨

Remember! Only 2 days left to vote for your favorite project on the MARCH platform.

🎙️Marie, co-founder & CEO of MARCH, on why the Awards are more than a competition: your project becomes part of an ecosystem.

She also shares the most stressful moment of a past edition, what makes this year’s jury special, and what the Awards mean to her.

And a Dutch word worth learning: “Geitenwollensokken” literally means “goat wool socks”, the playful Dutch nickname for the eco-conscious type.

MARCH Editorial | No. 5 bio-ecological renovation

The renovation of this late-19th-century townhouse in Antwerp was approached from a bio-ecological and circular perspective, retaining as much of the existing structure as possible while introducing natural, vapour-permeable materials throughout.

The townhouse’s historic character remains very present. High ceilings, mouldings, stained-glass windows, fireplaces and original wooden floors sit alongside new interventions that quietly bring the building into the present.

Inside, the layout was completely rethought to create three open-plan apartments. The rear was partially rebuilt, the roof raised to make space for terraces and natural light, and the circulation reorganised around the existing staircase and architectural details.

The material approach is what really caught our attention.

Wood fibre insulation and lime plaster on the exterior. Cellulose flakes in the roof. Lime-hemp and wood-wool in floors and walls. Restored timber floors, dry screeds with mineral granulates, gypsum fibreboards and linoleum complete the interior palette.

A renovation that uses natural materials not as an aesthetic statement, but as part of the building’s structure, comfort and indoor climate.

What we like about this project is how little it tries to separate the old from the new. Instead, different periods, materials and architectural details are allowed to form one coherent whole.

MARCH Editorial | No. 4 Grande Panorama

In Drøbak, Norway, a former nursing home from 1968 was transformed into 28 apartments through a thoughtful approach to adaptive reuse, circular design and material recovery.

The starting point was a strong structuralist concrete and brick building, with pronounced horizontal and vertical axes. Rather than covering this up, @borhavenarkitekter focused on bringing the original structure back into focus, removing later additions that had slowly obscured it.

The original concrete and brick façades were preserved. Bricks from demolished parts were cleaned and reused, while concrete elements were even “transplanted” inside the building to repair previous renovations.

And then there’s the teak windows.

They no longer worked with the new floor heights, but instead of being discarded, they found a second life in a floating sauna by @actstudio.eu, becoming part of Drøbak’s growing sauna culture.

A new wooden volume with seven apartments was added at the rear, creating a softer transition towards the surrounding neighbourhood. Outside, ramps and technical installations were removed to make space for greener areas, while new balconies and terraces open towards the Oslo Fjord.

What stayed with us is the way Grande Panorama treats an existing building not as something to work around, but as a resource.

Its structure, materials, proportions and even its windows all became part of the next chapter.
