Following its selection as a finalist for the @marchmaterials Awards 2026, we are happy to share some images from our project, The Stage of Possibilities.

The project is a temporary pavilion built on a former brownfield site in Kassel: an open platform for performances, gatherings and informal uses, integrating planting and small habitats within its wooden framework.

Designed and built through a one-week workshop, it reflects on how modest, reusable structures can activate overlooked urban spaces and turn them into places of encounter.

✨ We’re delighted that The Japanese Terrace has been selected as a finalist in the MARCH Materials Awards 2026.

Why this project matters

This project explores how materials can do more than look beautiful. Using clay plaster, locally sourced elm and low-VOC finishes, The Japanese Terrace was designed to support wellbeing, celebrate craftsmanship and create a healthier home for everyday living.

MARCH (Materials in Architecture) celebrates outstanding architecture and interiors that use better materials—showcasing real projects from across the UK and Europe.
If you believe materials can shape how we live, feel and connect to our homes, we’d be honoured to have your vote for The Japanese Terrace.

We made it to the finals! 🎉
First time we are part of an architecture competition, and this one feels SO right as @marchmaterials awards highlights biobased, circular and overall healthy and sustainable material choices.

March also collects all this in one inspiring plattform. This is exactly something we could have used when planning our house 10 years ago. So hopefully this will inspire many more to create, renovate and do it all with trutsworthy and sustainable materials.

We designed Rundbalshuset from scratch, allowing us the chance to plan exactly the home we wanted, one which simply melts into its landscape. We’ve been able to combine traditional and innovative solutions to build a bespoke, comfortable and resilient home which is adapted to the local climate. Here in northern Sweden it can be -30°C in the winter and snow covers the ground for months, but also over +30°C in the summer with increasingly common periods of dry weather.

Some material highlights & suppliers:

- foamglas slab (no concrete!)@eviasweden
- light weight beams with locally sourced wood by @masonitebeams
- clay powder used in our homemade clay plaster by @baramineraler
- clay putty for design finish by @conluto

You can read more on our homepage or at the MARCH materials competition.
