It’s a gorgeous day in Oslo today. And we want to know what kind of fjord activities you will be doing for the rest of September?

UPDATE:
300 signatures reached!
Thank you everyone!

Oslo friends and residents! 🙌🏽

The Oslofjord needs your help!

The Oslo 2040 land-use proposal DOES NOT include marine restoration as a standard measure. This could have significant negative effects through 2040, and we don’t want that! We want a living thriving Oslofjord so we can all enjoy it.

NB Oslofjorden! has written a petition to the Oslo City Council asking it to make marine restoration a standard measure. 300 signatures are needed for the City Council to consider it.

I made cute pixel-artwork as a final last push to help achieve it! (I hope you like my super cute harbor seal 🦭

It’s on my bio as well.
Thank you 🙌🏽

3,000 km. 6 weeks. 4 men. 1 vessel. 🌊

Our friend—and @mareaoslo team member—@MartinHelseth and the crew of the @nordic_endeavour_2026 Nordic Endeavour Voyage have now rowed more than 1,000 km on their extraordinary expedition along Norway’s coastline, documenting marine life and removing marine litter every step of the way.

Rowing in rotating two-hour shifts, day and night, the team has adapted to challenging conditions in Finnmark and is now aiming to reach Ålesund by August 22.

Every stop is a chance to leave the shoreline cleaner than they found it.

At Marea, we’re proud to celebrate this initiative that brings together science, restoration, community, and adventure to protect our shared waters.

A huge thank you to @rewildnorway and everyone on the Nordic Endeavour Voyage for their commitment to Norway’s coast. 💙

Follow their journey in real time on their instagram.

Fieldnotes: Oslofjord

I volunteered with @mareaoslo and @marinreparatorene while they collected seaweed for their restoration work. We gathered mother kelp and cut the seaweed blades before packing them into @seaweed_solutions , where they will release spores to grow sporophytes in the lab.

The experience made me revisit the work of the late marine biologist #rachelcarson and consider how I can connect her observations with my own practice as a scientific illustrator.

Carson wrote about colour as an indicator of an ecosystem’s condition. She described green coastal waters, in all their shifting hues, as the colour of life. Through that lens, I returned to the fjord and looked at it differently.

I focused on the colours at the surface and began to notice the contrast between clear water and the more common brown-green water, which limits visibility. These colours can reflect the effects of nutrient runoff, wastewater, sediment, and other pressures on the ecosystem.

Colour, colour, colour—I keep thinking about it and wondering what it can reveal. These days I am thinking more carefully about what the fjord is showing us, and about the role visual communication can play in help return our attention to the sea.

Oslofjord Day 💙
This Sunday 7 June, from 12:00–16:00, SALT art & music and @bymiljoetaten are hosting a free public family day dedicated to the Oslofjord — its ecosystems, challenges, and future.

The program brings together science, education, and play with activities for all ages:
• Pirate shows at 12:00 and 13:00
• Aquariums with species from the Oslofjord
• “Ghost fishing” house exhibition
• Face painting inspired by marine life
• Hands-on nature boxes and interactive installations
• Exhibits on marine pollution and plastic waste
• Objects recovered from the Oslofjord
• Activities supporting habitat building for marine animals

You’ll also meet organizations working directly with the fjord, including @rusken_oslo, Naturvernforbundet, @marinreparatorene, @leienbiolog and @mareaoslo ! taken in SALT art & music by @mareaoslo

We have now removed a total of 1,7 tonnes of marine waste from Skinnerbukta, and we can barely see the difference.
In a collaboration between @bymiljoetaten
@mareaoslo @oslofridykkerklubb and @marinreparatorene , we will do six volunteer freediving cleanups in the same bay, hoping to make a local difference
Thanks to @nordic_endeavour_2026 for joining in!

You will find the upcoming cleanups on the Marea Facebook page. Everyone is welcome!

2# From cell to ecosystem. 🪸

This is an introductory diagrammatic view of the process.

Kelp is grown in the @seaweed_solutions lab in Trondheim, seeded onto ropes, and deployed in the Oslofjord by @mareaoslo , where it gradually develops into a structure that can support marine life.

Shoutout to @mikelgraphicscience for his introductory course on vector illustration a few years back- I finally put it into practice. :)

Stay tuned for future posts! 📈

Collab announcement! 🪸

I’ve recently teamed up with @mareaoslo as a scientific illustrator.

They are a young non-profit working with kelp cultivation in the Oslofjord, with a focus on supporting the restoration of marine ecosystems over time.

My role is to translate parts of this process into scientific illustrations - making visible what usually remains unseen.

It’s my first time working this closely with a team like this, and I’m learning a lot from how they engage with the material and the environment.

Also just a genuinely great group of people to work with.

Team:
CEO: @martinhelseth
COO: @coriready.world
Marine biologists:
@simmenkar
@kajamalene
…and more

A closer look at the process in the next post. // 1st photo by: @binwar_

In November 2025, we put out the rope. We decided to test wool rope, reused rope that we carefully washed after last year’s harvest and new rope. And it looks like reused rope works very well! Which is one thing we really wanted to test this growing season. All rope was pre-seeded with kelp sporophytes cultivated in Trondheim by @seaweed_solutions —using local “mother kelp” we harvested nearby and sent to their lab.
From the 1 km deployed, we were able to wet harvest 122 kg of kelp. Thank you to everyone who joined the harvest. We had people from six nations on the team today— all with the goal of vibrant biodiversity in the Oslofjord. Thanks to Eli Rinde from @nivaforskning for taking scientific samples of the kelp, and to our project funders @oslo.kommune @miljodirektoratet. Thanks to Padda Båtforening for lending us the båtplass. Dreaming of kelp forests and carbon sinks. From fjord today to future fjord 🌊 taken in Padda Båtforening by @mareaoslo

Studio visit today with artist @crisse_nf. Cristina’s practice is creating textiles, objects and materials with both wild harvested seaweeds and shells as well as with agar agar and other commercially available sea products. How can the more than human world help us rid ourselves of the scourge of plastics? Cross-silo collaborations between artists, marine biologists, materials designers and others is the way! 🌊 taken in Kunsthøgskolen i Oslo by @mareaoslo
