We have now removed a total of 1,7 tonnes of marine waste from Skinnerbukta, and we can barely see the difference.
In a collaboration between @bymiljoetaten
@mareaoslo @oslofridykkerklubb and @marinreparatorene , we will do six volunteer freediving cleanups in the same bay, hoping to make a local difference
Thanks to @nordic_endeavour_2026 for joining in!

You will find the upcoming cleanups on the Marea Facebook page. Everyone is welcome!

The white carpet on this seafloor is not sand. It is Beggiatoa, a sulfur bacterium that thrives where nothing else can. It feeds on hydrogen sulfide and needs almost no oxygen. Where it blooms, the bottom has already given up.The smell is rotten eggs. That is H₂S, toxic even in low concentrations. Dizziness, nausea, disorientation. At higher levels it knocks out your sense of smell entirely, and then it knocks you out.

For a freediver at the surface, one breath of the wrong pocket of air can mean losing consciousness in the water. My friends where lucky. Some days later I went to investigate together with two scientists from The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA).

I usually dive down myself to document what I see. Not here. Here I lower my camera on a long pole and keep my head above water.
I have seen this in several places around Norway now. It shouldn’t be possible. But it is. And now, close to my home.

The oceans have lost roughly two percent of their dissolved oxygen since 1960. Warmer water holds less. Runoff feeds algae that sinks, rots, and steals what remains. Over 700 dead zones globally. The number keeps growing.

The ocean built the atmosphere we breathe. Billions of years of marine life put the oxygen there that we carry in our lungs. But the ocean isn’t filling our air anymore. It is struggling to keep enough for itself. We did this. The same species that once breathed thanks to the ocean is now suffocating it.

Imagine living in your home and one day there is no more air. That is what is happening below the surface. Try holding your breath.
Now try holding it forever.
