Since 2016, the Takata Research Center has worked tirelessly for the responsible development of Mahahual and the conservation of its natural ecosystems, establishing many programs and projects, the most notorious being the Mahahual Coral Restoration Project.

Over the past years, we’ve established 4 coral nurseries and successfully outplanted over 2500 corals, with the ambitious goal of restoring 10,000m2 of degraded coral reefs within the next 5 years. Committed to making a positive impact both locally and globally, we coordinate diverse initiatives to raise awareness about the marine ecosystem.

Recognizing the growth of our goals, we have decided to establish our research center as a distinctive entity, the Marine Resilience & Sustainability Center (MARES Center). With this move, we hope to increase our autonomy and effectiveness in pursuing our mission, increase fundraising opportunities, and amplify our impact. Together with the rebranding, the launch of our new website aims to increase transparency and showcase our achievements.

We are incredibly grateful to all our collaborators who contributed to taking this project to the next level. Thanks to @takata.experience for the continuous financial and logistic support. Our sister company will keep working hand in hand with us. We also thank our project and funding collaborators. This new chapter wouldn’t have been possible without you. Thanks to our students, interns, volunteers and followers for being the driving force behind our mission. Together, we’re ensuring a future for Mahahual and its marine wonders!

Today, we launch MARES as a birthday present for Nic, one of our founders who recently left us. MARES is Nic’s legacy and today is very special for all of us, who worked together with him to make it possible. In honour of Nic, we invite everyone to visit our website and enter the code 2602. There, you will find a special tribute dedicated to Nic. Happy birthday Nic, we love you🌻

🪸 Restoring the Mesoamerican Reef, One Spawning Event at a Time. 🌊

Did you know that genetic diversity is key to coral survival? At MARES Center, we use Coral Assisted Sexual Reproduction in Mahahual to help protect and rebuild degraded reef ecosystems.

Here is how our scientific process works:
1️⃣ Gamete Collection: Night spawning and gamete collection in the ocean, followed by transfer to our lab.
2️⃣ Assisted Fertilization: Guiding early embryonic and larval development.
3️⃣ Larval Settlement: Specialized post-settlement care in ex-situ nurseries.
4️⃣ Acclimatization: Transferring coral recruits to in-water marine nurseries.
5️⃣ Reef Restoration: Outplanting coral recruits to their natural habitat once resilient!

We focus on critical endangered species including:
Diploria labyrinthiformis (Grooved brain coral)
Acropora cervicornis (Staghorn coral)
Acropora palmata (Elkhorn coral)

Together, we’re building genetic resilience for future ocean life. 💙

🦑 Masters of color and communication

Caribbean reef squid are some of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean 🌊
They can change color in seconds, hunt in teams, and keep reef ecosystems in balance.

Small but essential 💙

👉 Have you ever seen a squid change colors underwater?
