@margallahillsmarathon 🎉🔥 Before trail running had a name in Pakistan, we were already running

2018. Margalla Hills. Pakistan’s first ever trail half marathon. No blueprint. No trail running culture. Just @islamabadrunwithus and a mountain that was ready.

Seven years later, the Margalla Hills Half Marathon 2026 sold out 450 slots in under a week. The event faced postponements due to Islamabad Talks. Multiple times trail closures. Over 100 refunds processed. New runners stepped in. And on race day, 455 runners showed up 🔥

That is not just a race. That is a community.
Pakistan’s original trail half marathon. Capped and on the beautiful margalla trails, organised by the same people who built it from nothing.
This is the Margalla Hills Half Marathon. At its finest. 🏔

In 2018, we stood at the start of Trail 3 and asked a simple question: what if Islamabad had a real trail race?

Not a fun run. Not a road race with a small hill thrown in. A proper half marathon (21.1 kilometres) across the Margalla Hills. Technical terrain. Genuine elevation. A course that would demand every bit of training you’ve put in.

So we built it.

The Margalla Hills Half Marathon became Pakistan’s first trail running half marathon. And every April since, runners have come back to this mountain. Some faster. Some braver. All of them changed by it.

The 4th official edition returns on 12 April 2025 🥳

10 YEARS OF IRU. 🇵🇰🏃‍♂️
Last Friday, Islamabad’s skies went wild. 🌧️⚡️ And somehow, it felt perfect.
@islamabadrunwithus

On September 11, 2016, IRU began with 3 people and a simple dream: build a running culture in Pakistan from scratch. No club, no blueprint, just belief and we did it 👇

Ten years later, thousands run across Pakistan. And through every storm, summer, and freezing winter, one thing never changed: we show up. Last Friday, despite heavy rain and wind, our community showed up to celebrate a decade together. Unforgettable.

But IRU was always bigger than weekly community runs.
🏔️ 2018: Margalla Hills Marathon, Pakistan’s first trail half-marathon @margallahillsmarathon

2020: Islamabad Marathon, now transforming marathon culture nationwide. Its 6th edition (2026) drew 5,000+ runners from 30+ countries. @isbmarathon

1,000+ free community activities. Countless runs, hikes, races. But the real win? People who never saw themselves as runners, now running, racing, inspiring others.

To everyone who ran, volunteered, believed: this decade belongs to you too. ❤️
We’ve come far. This is only the beginning.
10 YEARS OF IRU. 10 YEARS OF RUNNING TOGETHER.

@margallahillsmarathon The final highlights of Pakistan’s original trail running race are here
Captured by @strideSportslab 🔥

The Margalla Hills Half Marathon 2026, what a journey it was to get here.

500 slots. Sold out in 3 days. Postponed twice due to Islamabad Talks. Over 100 refunds processed. New runners stepped in. Hundreds turned away because the cap is the cap and we hold to it.

Then one dat before the race day, section 144 in Islamabad forced a last minute route change. A different start point. A redesigned course. Communicated a few hours before the race.

Then race morning arrived. It rained a few hours before the start. The trails turned fresh. The weather turned perfect. And 455 runners showed up ready.

Males and females. National and international athletes. Youth to elders. All of them on the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the Margalla Hills, supporting each other from start line nerves to finish line endorphins.

Challenge after challenge. Postponements. Refunds. Route changes. Section 144. Every obstacle this year threw at us but Team IRU absorbed it, adapted, and delivered a flawless race experience without missing a beat. That is what pioneers do.

This is the Margalla Hills Half Marathon. Pakistan’s original trail running race since 2018. Built by the trendsetters of running culture in Pakistan.

See you in 2027. 🤝

Behind every great race, there’s a greater team. @margallahillsmarathon 2026 happened because of these people 👇

Shakila: led the registration team across both BIB collection days and then anchored medal distribution on race day. Every finisher who received their medal, that was her.

Hashim Naz & Salman Lodhi: The backbone. Event management, ground coordination, every moving part.

Dr Raza: Admin & Race MOC. Calm, present, essential.

Faisal Nawaz & Waqas: led race timing before the start and managed it flawlessly throughout. Later joined by Atifa who stepped in and delivered on race day.

Shajar: Technology lead & registration support. The quiet force behind the screen.

Ejaz: Trail 4 from parking to 5K return. He held the line all morning.

Haseeb & Mohsin: Trail 4 ridge marshaling. Most demanding position on course. They owned it.

Fahad Ayub & Faisal Dawood: Pirsohawa road marshaling & hydration. Every runner fuelled and on course.

Our incredible female team: Every hydration point on course. Energy, precision, heart. Critical role. Delivered. 💪

Mona: Media engagement. Right coverage, right story, positive image of trail running in Pakistan. Every single time. 📣

Naved, Ali, Mussawar & Baqir, The Stride Sports Lab: Every story, every stride, 4,500+ moments captured. Follow @Stridesportslab for more.

To every volunteer and team member who showed up before sunrise and stayed until the last runner crossed, this race was yours. Every role mattered. Thank you. 🙏
This is Team IRU. This is what we are made of. ❤️

@margallahillsmarathon The vibe at the Margalla Hills Half Marathon 2026 was unmatched. 🏔

From youth to elders. Locals to internationals. Every runner, every pacer, every volunteer — all of them showing up for each other on the same trails at the same time.

The atmosphere was electric. Runners encouraging strangers mid-climb. Volunteers holding the line at every critical point. A community that didn’t just run a race, it showed what it’s made of.

8 years ago, IRU organised Pakistan’s first ever trail half marathon, the Margalla Hills
half Marathon’s first edition, with no blueprint, no trail running culture and no guarantee anyone would show up.

This year, the Margalla Hills Half Marathon sells out in under a week. People from all walks of life, all ages, all backgrounds trust this race, trust this community and keep coming back.
That trust is everything. And we don’t take it lightly.

This is the Margalla Hills Half Marathon. Built by IRU. Owned by the community. 🤝
