Silent Pressures is part of the Otherwise Residency program, Marginal’s core platform for artistic research at the intersection of art, science, and public policy. It provides artists and researchers with the time, resources, and context to explore questions that exceed conventional disciplinary boundaries, allowing art to take an active stance towards contemporary environmental issues.
The second run of the art–science research residency, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Biology Bucharest of the Romanian Academy and 2Celsius, connects artists and specialists in scientific research, pollution monitoring and environmental policy, in three explorations of the ways in which we relate to otherness and the non-human across perceptual strata.

Silent Pressures - Opening 14th of October, 18:00 – 21:00, Atelier 35, Bucharest

Dominika Glogowski worked with Mihai Stoica and Théophile Humann-Guilleminot exploring anthropogenic fugitive methane emissions from aging industrial oil and gas infrastructures in Romania.
When the threat is imperceptible with our senses, how can one create an embodied encounter with this gas? And, on a larger scale, how can we hear and feel the damages that methane is inflicting on ecosystems?

Silent Pressures - Opening 14th of October, 18:00 – 21:00, Atelier 35, Bucharest

Alexandra Costea collaborates with Cristina Moisesecu and Ana Zamfirescu around microalgae that could act as biofertilizers for degraded soils. When rapid human activity clashes with the deep time of our planet, what does that change in ourselves? Can we go back to the origins of life to slow down or even reverse this process?

Anna Dumitriu collaborates with Dr. Alexandra Ciocan to explore the power of edelweiss and smoketree calli extracts against pathogens. Can the mythology related to warding off malevolent forces or symbols of immortality gain new meanings in today's context?

14th of October, 18:00 – 21:00, Atelier 35, Bucharest

The opening of the Silent Pressures exhibition, curated by Sabina Suru, concludes the second edition of the Otherwise Residency. Imagined as an open-ended exploration, the 3 artistic research projects developed during the residency, deal with the in-betweenness increasingly present in our societies. How can nature reflect back on our identity when fragile temporalities and materialities collide? How can medicine function at the crossroads of science and mythology, and history and the future? And how can we embody invisibility when it's menacing our very existence, on an individual and a planetary scale?

With works by Alexandra Costea in collab with Cristina Moisescu and Ana Zamfirescu, Anna Dumitriu in collab with Alexandra Ciocan, and Dominika Glogowsky working with Mihai Stoica and Théophile Humann-Guilleminot, the exhibition delves into topics of survival, evolution and resilience, across various scales of time and space.

They say an antique typewriter, the dinosaur species from Jurassic Park, and musical weather phenomena have nothing in common, but we don’t quite believe that’s true.

Come to the third edition of Marginal Quiz to find out why. It’ll be an evening where art, science, technology, and pop culture come together. Alongside your hosts for the evening, Claudiu Revnic and Ada Anghel, you’ll dive into the most unexpected fields and topics — and every now and then, you’ll run into the beloved and incomparable music round.

📅 October 5, 18:30–21:30
📍 Zadar Bar (23 Mircea Vulcănescu St.)

You don’t need to have figured out the meaning of life — just bring your curiosity. Spots are limited. Fill out the form by October 4, and we’ll send you a confirmation by email.

The opening weekend of @simultan.org Festival in Timișoara was a great opportunity to talk about what infrastructure leaves behind - from energy and noise, to uncertainty and competing versions of reality. The open lab and the Techno-natural mutations exhibition become an open space for debate and collective learning, around the way Unplugged? Symbiont No. 3 by Lorena Cocora & Alexandra Costea scavenged urban energy, or A Field Guide to Orbital Melancholy by Cezar Mocan talked about AI scavenging information to generate incompatible reconstructions of an ecological anomaly.

Thank you Simultan for the opportunity to have no clean resolution and no stable viewpoint!

Last weekend was about finding something to test, explain, question, or get your hands on. During the Unplugged? public event at @the.legacy.house.eu, visitors moved between compost-based bio-batteries, salvaged devices, low-tech networks, and the prototypes that the team had been building throughout the week.

There were demos, treasure hunts, conversations, live tests, small failures, unexpected connections... and quite a few moments of “let’s see what happens.” Because we weren't looking for finished solutions, but rather open, collaborative experiments in how technology might borrow from permaculture: working with what is already there, reusing resources, and building systems that can adapt rather than simply consume.

Big thanks to everyone who came, asked questions, tried things out, and stayed curious!

At the end of the collaborative co-creation week, things are still messy - in the best possible way.

Old devices are being collected and taken apart. Batteries are being made from compost. New tools are taking shape. Low-tech net art is being built around bio-battery infrastructure.

A lot is still unfinished. Some things are still unclear. That’s exactly where the work is right now.

Tomorrow, the team opens for the public what they’ve been making, testing and breaking during Unplugged? - a Marginal project looking at how technology can learn from permaculture.

In the middle of constructing "The Methane Whisperer"!
.
Grateful to have been part of the Otherwise Residency with @marginal.ro, @cleanairtaskforce, @2celsius, working on fugitive methane emissions with fieldwork in Romania in June 2026. More to follow at "Silent Pressures," the final exhibition at @atelier35.bucharest, part of Romanian Art Week, opening 14 October in Bucharest.

What happens when art, technology, and science unplug from traditional boundaries?

On 26th of September, from 13:00 to 18:00, we are opening the doors to hands-on presentations, informal discussions and workshops where we explore our complex relationship with energy, technology, art and digital infrastructures.

° Low-Tech Net Art Workshop - Shinji Toya, Mariana Marangoni, David Lazar
14:00 - 16:30

We will explore different methods of minimal and hand-crafted web coding focusing on alternatives HTML and CSS uses for net art practices and make net art with a tiny AI running on a Raspberry Pi: A hands-on, low-tech session on slower, more sustainable AI-assisted coding. After this, you will here is an opportunity to exhibit your works on a server powered by compost bio-batteries.

Please bring your laptop, preferably with a text editor installed.
Register - link in bio.

° Digital Archival Preservation Workshop - Zachary Furste, Diego Gómez-Venegas
13:00 - 17:00

BYO (bring your own) E-waste, leave with your own archival server

This workshop invites you to bring in an old phone, tablet, e-reader, laptop, desktop, or wireless router and learn how to transform the device into a functioning component of a living, distributed archive. We’ll discuss some basic goals of permacomputing and the compost.cc project, then we’ll perform “device archaeology” to assess the new contributions and work together to restore devices that can be converted into a functioning server.
