Todd Bienvenue and Hannah Rowan curated a really, really fun and creative booth at the Spring Break Art Fair this year! The prompt was to make work with your kids art materials, to test those mediums that aren’t so kind to the artistic pursuit as professional materials. And it was a blast! I kept with my current obsessive subject, the frog as a symbol of world resistance to destruction and evil, and maintained the playful nature of happily making art by day and by night.
Spring break is happening RIGHT NOW! And all this weekend.
Bravo Todd and Hannah for bringing a 🔥 group of artists together and thanks for including me too!

Let me know if you’d like a custom vehicle tribute hat with a blown out patch!! $150, shipping included for the US and $150 + shipping for outside the US.

I made this Nance one for Eliot when Nance bit the dust and after just recently having the best time making this MEF one for someone else, I realized it’s something I’d like to do again! They make great presents! DM me to make your dreams come true.

This frog patiently waits to catch the biggest of the flies on a sunny afternoon

I hope that we can avoid all the slim probable worst case scenarios for our world, yet simultaneously embark on a new chapter of humanity that embraces the slim probable best case scenarios.
The frog population is abundant this year, when last year it felt like there were only three in my pond. Just the other afternoon, I swear there were fourteen visibly chilling in the pond and possibly wondering why I was staring at them. Last year, it seemed improbable that I’d be counting so many in one moment… yet the best case scenario had happened and the worst case scenario (the earth ball deflating, for one) didn’t happen.

Another frog catches flies on a sunny afternoon!

These increased warnings about advanced AI and superintelligence causing human extinction by 2030 is hella freaky. It’s nice that there are agreements being made about slowing down the development of advanced AI… but how about straight up pausing that research. How about a ban on superintelligence. Let’s be like the frogs in my yard and let’s prevail. Let’s overcome these chaotic times and survive. Let Earth heal.
Orrrrrrr, are we going to choose end time space inhabiting for trillions of humans? Even that is best attained by building that whole comfortable outer space habitat BEFORE building the advanced AI that will chase us off our home world.

Frog
Such a resilient animal in our wildlife abundant yard. This year the frog has reigned over the salamander… last year the salamander had been crowned victor. They battle in a little frog pond in front of our house and beyond in the swamp in the woods and in the vernal stream that runs along our house and in the vernal swamp in the meadow. Can humans be as resilient as the frog? Can we maintain a healthy world, environment, social equality, despite our disagreements and infectious greed? Maybe we can and maybe we will.

I really like this one and the first running canvas
This is running canvas #4. My time is so limited in the studio, not just because of the limited amount of time that I can get to the studio, having two young kids. My studio time is even further limited, drastically, because of the amount of space my brain gives to thoughts about my children and how they are being raised and what is best for them and what is worst, and so many more variations of thoughts that come with motherhood, for me.
Recently, I had two days to be in the studio, free of thoughts about my children because I knew they were happy and well cared for. It had a profound effect on me because of the realization that I hadn’t had this kind of time free from those thoughts, this time to dedicate my mind to the studio, in 6 years. That deeply saddened me. I feel a huge loss from that long absence of time to immerse myself in my creative thoughts.
I desperately need more full days that include nights that are linked to another day that includes a night. Just stepping into the studio for a 4 hour shift each day gives horrible injustice to the mental dedication required for me to focus on what I am doing in the studio.
It is no surprise to me that right before this profound realization of this mental space and dedication that I’ve been missing, I was making running canvases. They are running away from me. The canvases are no longer interested in being a part of a 4 hour thinly meditated power shift. by @margotbird

There's still time to see MAGIC WOODS!

The exhibition is open Saturday, July 11 and Saturday, July 18, from 12–5 PM (or by appointment).

We're lucky to have two paintings by the incredibly talented Margot Bird in the show. Pictured here is Jungle Helicopter with Tabby Buttons, a wonderful example of her playful figurative paintings, which often feature kittens in delightfully unexpected places.

Magic Woods takes its title from the podcast of the same name by George Patrick Leal (who even stopped by to see the exhibition!). The stories follow talking animals as they shape-shift and time travel through magical worlds. When we began imagining a show centered on world-building and the ways the natural world grounds and connects us, Margot's paintings immediately came to mind.

We especially loved seeing Jungle Helicopter with Tabby Buttons in conversation with @zaqlandsberg's F-16 wreckage installation in the woods just beyond the gallery. While we all construct our own realities, Margot's paintings offer a dreamy, playful oasis that we'd happily disappear into.
