Bias Cut
2025
Mixed media

โ€œBias Cutโ€ is made up of two main parts: a dress and a video. The dress is the central object in the installation and connects the entire work. It is hand-sewn.

I used white recycled fabric, the kind often used for testing patterns during the design process.
On the upper part of the dress, a video is placed. It abstractly shows the process of making a pattern, a metaphor for how traditions and superstitions are born and passed down. How does a single story told by one person become a tradition, then a rule passed down for generations.

The dress acts as a connector visually and conceptually. The story is told through the video, which fits into the design as if the dress is its frame. The video shows both personal memories and my work process: the steps of cutting, sewing, shaping from nothing into something meaningful.

The video is made up of many layers of visual materials, placed over each other. My goal is for the viewer to experience the process as rhythmic and focused, something that requires attention and emotional engagement. I want each person to create their own narrative based on their experience. That story may not directly relate to my culture, but it might reflect a cycle of creation and destruction, memory and forgetting, storytelling and transformation.

The last day to see Visual Arts Diploma Graduation Exhibition is tomorrow - July 10 at the Campus Gallery ( @vaads.freeuni )

The reversed dress

This work is inspired by an old Soviet-era tradition in which people decorated the surface of carpets with cotton during celebrations, creating words and messages that usually expressed wishes for happiness, prosperity, and well-being.

In my work, I transform this cotton decoration into an ornamental pattern that becomes part of a contemporary carpet. By reinterpreting this tradition, I explore how each generation reshapes inherited surfaces and inscribes them with a new visual language. The carpet becomes a metaphor for cultural memory its surface constantly rewritten as traditions evolve and new meaning.

About the dress:

Xosฬงbษ™xt olun โ€” Be Happy

The phrase โ€œXosฬงbษ™xt olunโ€ (โ€œBe Happyโ€) is transformed through folding and cutting the paper, reversing the original text and giving it a more ornamental visual form. Through this process, the words gradually lose their function as a readable message and become a pattern -shifting from language into ornament.

The dress continues this idea of reversal, as it can also be worn inside out. Turning the garment becomes a physical extension of the concept: both the text and the dress can be reversed, revealing another side and another way of seeing and interpreting them. by @mari_babaevi
