submitted my doctoral thesis ~ The Art of Listening

My research explored how listening could function as a techno-social critique, resisting the disembodying tendencies of contemporary technology, not by rejecting it, but by reconfiguring the relationship between body, technology, and perception through design. Throughout the years, I developed a range of instruments and sonic artefacts to engage with listening as a counter-practice within the context of digitalisation and the attention economy where stillness and attention become acts of resilience.

Along the way, I had the joy of collaborating with and learning from talented artists and makers, theatre maker @sofiekramer_performance Sofie Kramer and architect @fenderwall Iris van der Wal, whose contributions helped my artistic practice expand beyond sound and music.
Very grateful for the conversations with @b_llabelle Brandon LaBelle and participating in the Listening Academy deeply enriched my work.

I am especially grateful to my supervisor and mentor, Jessica Hemmings, whose thoughtful remarks and support enabled me to work at my best. Many thanks to @zsuzsanna Zsuzsanna Koos for her super thorough editorial and translation work bringing the thesis to its final form. and thanks to @mome_budapest for giving me this opportunity

Mári Mákó is a composer, instrument inventor and researcher. Her work brings together electroacoustic experimental music, interdisciplinary art and technology, not just as a tool, but as an integral part of her artistic process. Her music touches on avant-garde electronic and post-club, with a controlled but abstract sense of complexity.

For this year’s Gaudeamus Festival, she is developing a new instrument for a multichannel speaker setup: a sculptural metal string instrument inspired by the forms and tradition of harp, reimagined through minimal contemporary aesthetics. With an interactive electronic design combined with the acoustical sound of the harp strings, she transforms physical gestures in real time into immersive sonic environments.

@mari_mako_ is a composer and researcher working between Rotterdam and Berlin. Her practice moves through electroacoustic experimentation, contemporary classical composition, and interdisciplinary collaboration, producing work, described as avant-garde electronic and post-club, that is controlled, abstract, and dense with detail, engaged with the political and philosophical stakes of how we listen.

Collaboration is central to her method: she works inside hybrid territories where composition becomes inseparable from object-making, choreography, light, and theory. She designs and builds her own instruments, treating instrument-making as a compositional and conceptual act, a way of negotiating agency with materials that resist full authorial control. In performance, this commitment extends to the human voice, which she renders tactile and tangible, softening the edges of her sonic architectures. As a PhD candidate at MOME Budapest, she investigates sound sculptures and the sound of sculptures, alongside technologies that explore the materiality and spatiality of noise.

Recent collaborations make these commitments concrete. With choreographer Sofie Kramer, she has developed a performance in which the pole, that overdetermined object of contemporary visual culture, becomes the mediating instrument: “We see that the mediator, the pole, is encapsulating the modern material world, which we transform with the help of sensory design. By turning the pole into a ‘living’ entity with sounds, we can break down and develop another sense of ritual.” For Bernar Venet’s Generative Environments at Sotheby’s New York, she composed the sound component, translating Venet’s sculptural logic into a sonic field.

At the Trafohalle, Mári performs with @gabor_kitzinger, whose cinematographic light environment becomes the spatial counterpart to her sound. by @mari_mako_

Drifted~~ just premiered at @novembermusicnl brought to life by @spaceshipensemble 🌬️

Drifted reimagines Kodály Zoltán’s collected folksong “Felülről fúj az őszi szél” (The autumn wind is blowing from above) into a sustained soundmass drone piece, where the notes are stretched and harmonically extended, forming a floating landscape with vocals.

Paired with a fan installation, the wind becomes part of the music, while ribbons flying in a slow hypnotic motion. The folksong’s story of lovers trying to find each other is mirrored in ribbons that never quite touch, but still trying to reach each other.

^^thanks @julianmapleoliveira for the support and the fun times and @spaceshipensemble for the beautiful performance 🪽

Next time in February at @dagindebranding at @korzotheater

and possibly showing Cylyre’s new version
