Happy Mother's Day

Portrait of this beautiful soul, mother, photographer and more, @jazzybelle__
As I always say: It wasn't until I became a mom that I truly realized how far away from nature we are. How much of society tells us what to do or how to be which only pushes us farther from the reality of raising our kids. Farther from truly loving our kids. How to even love our selves. Sometimes it can be a constant battle leaving many moms to isolate.
Amazingly, more moms are able to be in communication with others, building communities... Tribes. More moms are gaining access to information and stories that help heal their battle in the transition to motherhood. Many more moms are feeling loved and know it's okay to be HUMAN.

We see this alot but its okay to see again.
You are enough.
You are beautiful.
Your milk is enough.
Your love is enough.
Your presence is enough.
Your honesty is enough.
Your honesty in not knowing with the curiosity to continuosly learn is enough.
Your voice is enough.
Your growing intuition is enough.

We are not meant to be perfect but it is through such imperfections and honest loving parenting that our children will understand love and acceptance within themselves to then spread through others, along with an abundance of confidence for us all to grow.
Those without moms or who have lost ...you are enough.

Appreciate those who care for others everyday. Not just today -Maria J

Kristie (@silkysmoov33 ), a 23 year old mother to be (now 9 months pregnant) from Yonkers, continues her work as a substitute teacher teaching pre-k to middle school aged students. She believes that children simply want to be heard and have someone they can to relate to. As substitutes tend to have a reputation of just sitting back or being a sign for a lazy day, Kristie engages using her time to learn of her students and understand them. Real interaction. She stresses the freedom to express in a safe space is vital for children, especially those of underprivileged backgrounds.
Originally traveling to Yonkers to photograph Kristie for her maternity photos, I found myself connecting with her through deep conversation. We spoke of motherhood, life, the changes and challenges that come along as well as family. We also discussed the similar theme among many women I have met, taking on the task and deep work of breaking generational cycles while healing personal traumas as well. I soon learned, on top of being a single mom, her daughter's dad was unfortunately deported to Mexíco. With shock, it suddenly hit me in a new way to see how the climate of out country not only affects others, but also those in our everyday lives. With grace, Kristie managed to continue her discussion throughout our shoot. "I want my daughter and I to be able to visit him a few times a year". Gratefully, with support from her family, she can raise her daughter as she heals not just physically, but spiritually and mentally.
Kristie's goal is to continue her path as a teacher, connecting with children the best way she believes they deserve, while raising her daughter on the way. .

Working with @fulloutfarrish through both The Mercury Store and CUNY Dance Initiative (@cdi_dance ) artist residencies has been nothing less than amazing and inspiring. Kayla's ability to connect, freely express, create and bring stories to life through the freedom of bringing thoughts, dreams, inner messages and so much more to life is beautifully visible throughout the process of her work including current work in-progress- A Beast That Came Apart Mid -Air. Seeing how artists @nyla.js , @kenndances , @karmel_small , @trulifetaray , @kendall_ramirez , @marirosacrawford , @alexmakesmusic , @tashaeudo and @fulloutfarrish dedicated time creatively exploring various concepts through layers and intertwining of numerous perspectives, personal experiences and memory alongside historical and ancestral contexts created a space of commitment, trust, laughter, challenged and intensified emotions as well as deep communal growth.
