🖼️✨: We’re excited to announce Maria J. Hackett (@mariajhackett) as one of the featured artists in our latest Black Women Photographers x Photoville exhibition: What We See When We Are Seen.

Curated by Polly Irungu, this exhibition brings together a powerful collective of artists whose work reflects the expansiveness of Black women’s visual storytelling — from portraiture and documentary practice to street photography, community narratives, and global perspectives. At its core, this exhibition is about visibility, access, and remembrance — affirming the importance of inclusive, community-rooted storytelling and honoring the ways Black artists document and shape the world around them.

✨Photoville is free and open to the public, with 80+ exhibitions on view from May 16–30th. Visit the BWP Exhibition at Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Born and raised in China, didn’t really understand the importance and the beauty of my culture till I watch my culture from the other side of the world.

We look good in our clothes. I want to honor, feel, learn, share, and actually add it back to daily life. This practice is not easy because so much has been lost along the history, Im finding my own way here.

I rarely hear the phrase “my people” among us, while you are my people. Not segregating but to openly and loudly speak and feel, that we love, are proud of and support each other. Express it.

Politics pushed me away from it for sure, also the whole country focused on being western, modern, fast, etc, so nobody can colonize us. I understand me, I understand the country and that collective fear and anxiety.

But now, I come back here. Because I choose so.

big 2025 updates: started hrt, left the country for the 1st time and had a late euro summer, entered my touring artist era, got to be a lead actor in a feature film made with my friends, had the right-of-passage Judson Memorial performance, performed as a violist again, offered free community yoga classes, got invited to a movie premiere because of my tiktok

other 2025 updates: had a fancy birthday, shook ass, rebuked FOMO and stayed in more, kissed my friends, made myself laugh, cuddled with my friends, had a semi-consistent journaling practice, had more photo shoots, and some other things i’m sure i’m forgetting

2026 is looking less like large photo dumps and more like 1-5 — MAYBE 10-12 — photos MAX

🗽🪕Recapping some recent experiences in New York 🗽🪕

What a joy it has been to be in connection with so many amazing community members who are building and elevating their own work with the banjo in New York!

Scenes in the reel are recapping the amazing film premier last week at @docnycfest with the amazing team who created a film starring @hannah_mayree that highlights the work of the @black.banjo.reclamation project. @ebonymarieb @justinwhittinghamfilm @metamorphsound @alyssamopia all did a wonderful of portraying the work being done and making it so captivating and beautiful.

Other New York Highlights: Brooklyn Banjo Reclamation taking place once a month at @thefreeblackwomenslibrary and our new banjo brokerage repair collaboration with @brooklynlutherie!

So much connection was made, many good times were had. We talk more about this in our latest Patreon post.
