Hi, I’m Mariana Deters! My passion for journalism comes from a strong belief in using media to give a voice to people who are not always heard and to share stories that matter. I enjoy writing, speaking with others, and using journalism as a way to inform and connect communities.

I’m a mass communications major with a concentration in news broadcast. I’ve been developing my skills through hands-on experience and leadership roles. I’m especially interested in how news is produced and shared through television, radio, and print, and how each platform shapes storytelling.

I’m at the beginning of my journalism career and excited to keep learning and growing in the field.

I want to thank @usforacle for such an incredible learning experience, constant support, and opportunities to grow. I am also so grateful for this beautiful graphic.

I recently covered a story on a crucial nationwide hot topic. Gas prices are skyrocketing right now, and it's starting to affect USF students, especially commuters.

This story was referenced in a USA Today story by senior reporter Jessica Guynn, which was such an exciting moment.

I’m proud that my reporting for The Oracle was included in a USA Today article discussing how rising gas prices linked to the Iran war are affecting commuters across the country.

I'm really glad I was able to contribute to the conversation and share students' perspectives on this issue.

Nicholas Eisengrein, a USF alum who graduated in 2026 with a degree in business management, spent long days delivering food around Tampa for Uber Eats and DoorDash while studying at USF. Few of those orders, he noticed, went to college students.

The gap between USF students and local businesses became 9Yaps, a mobile app that connects students with discounts from local businesses. Eisengrein said the app now has more than 15,000 downloads and more than 100 business partners in the Tampa Bay area.

“I think I did about 2,000 deliveries in Tampa, and maybe a dozen of them were to students,” Eisengrein said.

“Obviously there, that’s where the gap was.”
Users can browse participating businesses and available deals through the app, then visit a location and redeem a discount directly at the checkout. Rather than ordering through the app, users make their purchases in person and use 9 Yaps to save money, Eisengrein said.

He said local businesses near USF wanted to reach students, but many struggled to get their attention.

Friday was my last day as a Programming Intern at Bloom on WFLA News Channel 8… but surprise! I’m so blessed to be coming back this fall! 🥹💙

This summer has been such an incredible experience. From pitching guests, writing web posts, setting up cameras and teleprompters, capturing B-roll and seeing what goes into producing a show, I’ve learned SO much in such a short amount of time.

I’m also incredibly grateful for the opportunity to shadow the team at TampaHoy and experience what a newsroom is like from a different perspective. Getting to see the fast-paced world of news firsthand only reinforced something I’ve been working toward throughout college: I want to work in TV news. 🥹📺

Most of all, I’m grateful for everyone who took the time to teach me, answer my endless questions and trust me with opportunities to step outside my comfort zone. Getting to watch ideas go from a pitch to a finished segment has been one of my favorite parts of this experience.

And the best part? This isn’t goodbye! I’ll be returning to Bloom this fall as a Programming Intern, and I can’t wait to keep learning, creating and growing with this amazing team. 🫶

Thank you to everyone at Bloom, WFLA and TampaHoy who made this summer so memorable. So excited for what’s next! ✨ by @marianadetersreporting

I officially started my journey as a Resident Assistant at USF this week, and I couldn’t be more excited! 💚🐂

Housing has been such a big part of my college experience since my freshman year, and this truly feels like a full-circle moment. From Area Council, to RHA, and now serving as an RA, I’m so grateful for every opportunity that’s led me here. I can’t wait to build community, make memories, and help make this hall feel like home for my Summer B residents and beyond.

Let’s have an astronomical summer! 🪐💫 by @marianadetersreporting

I’m more than excited to share that yesterday I started a new internship as a Programming Intern at WFLA News Channel 8 working with Bloom TV!

Bloom TV is a lifestyle and entertainment show filmed in the Tampa Bay area that highlights local businesses, community events, food, travel, wellness and inspiring stories.

On my first day, I already got to experience so many cool things on a real set and see what goes on behind the scenes during production. It was such an exciting experience, and it made me even more excited for everything ahead!

I’m very grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to keep learning and growing in the industry! 📺✨

Mosaic, a Tampa-based fertilizer and agricultural company, is seeking federal approval to expand one of its waste piles by 180 acres - raising concerns among Tampa Bay environmental advocates and USF students.

Mosaic’s Riverview East Stack waste pile is a hundreds-feet-tall phosphogypsum stack that contains radioactive waste left over from fertilizer production, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
It is located about 20 miles south of US’s Tampa campus.

In February 2026, Mosaic requested a Clean Water Act permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to fill nearby waters west of its Riverview facility, according to WUSF.

The phosphogypsum stack was expected to reach capacity around 2030 - but the proposed expansion would extend operations at the site to about 2046, according to The CLEO Institute.

Phosphogypsum is a waste byproduct from fertilizer production that contains radioactive materials, including radium, which can decay and increase cancer risk, according to the EPA.

Mosaic has also supported US in the past - donating $100,000 in 2025 to expand Feed-A-Bull’s main Tampa campus facility, now known as the Mosaic Pantry, according to USF.

Patricia Spellman, an assistant professor at USF, focuses on research topics including groundwater hydrology and agricultural sustainability.

Spellman said there is “no good way” to dispose of phosphogypsum, which is cancer-causing, adding that it must be contained and regulated for public safety.

She added that several environmental concerns and questions come with the expansion - including how phosphogypsum will be handled in the future, how it can be reused or recycled and what to do about the increasing piles of waste in the area.

“This could just be a never-ending process, and I think that the proximity to the coast, the vulnerability of that area, it could increase risk for human health and wildlife,” Spellman said. “So I’m not a huge fan of it.”

USF President Moez Limayem inducted 34 new members into the Student Ambassadors program on March 10. Established by the USF Alumni Association in 1979, the program connects students with alumni and the broader community.

Student ambassadors serve as official representatives of the University of South Florida. They support campus events, donor engagement, presidential functions and community outreach while gaining professional experience.

LaToya Wider, director of student relations, said ambassadors represent all USF campuses and serve until graduation. About 60 students currently hold the role across the university’s three campuses.

Students are selected each spring through a competitive process requiring a minimum 2.9 GPA, application materials and strong campus involvement. Finalists complete a three-step interview process, including a final interview with the university president.

USF leaders and ambassadors say the program builds leadership skills while promoting school pride across campus.

As the academic year comes to an end, I’ve been reflecting on my journey with the Residence Hall Association (RHA), especially serving as the National Communications Coordinator (NCC). This role challenged me, but helped me grow as a leader, communicator, and person. As NCC, I worked on bids for regional and national conferences, voted on legislation, and represented the University of South Florida.

This academic year, I attended and represented USF at the Leadership Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP), the Regional Business Conference (RBC), and the Regional Leadership Conference (RLC), where I strengthened leadership skills and connected with students nationwide. I’m grateful for the NCC Fierce Pierce Award at RBC (2026) and 2nd Place Roll Call Video and Certificate of Recognition at RLC (2025).

One of my favorite parts of conferences has been trading clothing pins and merch with other schools. I’ve collected many lanyards full with pins, and each pin represents a different university and memory, a reminder of the connections I’ve built.

Being part of the Executive Board also allowed me to help plan large scale events for USF residents and connect with many people through tabling and planning. Beyond conferences, supporting events such as Holly Block Party and ResFest, and working with area councils to build community, made this experience even more meaningful.

Through all of this, I’ve been proud to represent USF within the South Atlantic Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (SAACURH) region. My journey continues as I step into my role as the National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) Conference Representative at this upcoming NACURH conference in late May. NACURH last May was my first conference as NCC and truly phenomenal, so returning in a new role feels like a full circle moment.

I’m so grateful for this experience and can’t wait to wrap it up at NACURH this May! 🐂🔷🦁 by @marianadetersreporting
