Maria Moles is one of the artists performing for Squashed—THIS WEEKEND at Essendon Squash.

Maria is a drummer who has been strongly active within the Melbourne improvised music community, performing and collaborating with some of Australia’s most renowned artists. She has performed with The Australian Art Orchestra, Anthony Pateras, Jim Denley, Speak Percussion, Jon Rose, Andrea Keller, James Rushford, The Splinter Orchestra, Lucas Abela, and The Hobart Improvisers Collective, and developed ongoing relationships with organisations such as Liquid Architecture, Tonelist (Perth), Nice Music, and Inland Concert Series. Maria is currently the drummer for groundbreaking pop bands/artists Jaala, On Diamond, and Francis Plagne, and has previously drummed for Mildlife, Jess Ribeiro, Krakatau, Sui Zhen, Evelyn Ida Morris, JK Group, and Horatio Luna. This diverse experience has allowed Maria to develop a versatile and unique style, helping her gain recognition as one of Melbourne’s finest improvisers.

Sunday 21 June 5pm

An empty squash court has a very particular echo. Built for a sport once among the nation's most loved games, the walls of the Essendon courts hold the sounds of another era. Join Kaylie Melville (vibraphone), Marshall McGuire (harp), Maria Moles (drum kit) and Rohan Dasika (bass) — as they serve and volley, drive and boast, flam and strike, bow and pluck; reimagining a forgotten sport into a concert for percussion and strings.

Ashley Dyer: Lead Artist/ Performer Marshall McGuire: Collaborating Artist/ Harpist
Maria Moles: Collaborating Artist/ Drummer Rohan Dasika: Collaborating Artist/ Double Bass

A full day program of participatory walks, sessions and talks awaits on Saturday May 2. Here's what's happening performance-wise!

— Make-Shift, DIY contemporary dance/sound collab instigators, present a manifestation of their bi-monthly series, where work-in-progress is shared and discussed

— Saskia Willinge, Uma Volkmer & Naoko Uemoto present Seed Fund instigated new work based on real and imaginary research of Lake Jualbup

— Prolific drummer Maria Moles - collaborator of Jonnine, Francis Plagne, Jules Reidy, Helen Svoboda & many others - plays with Boorloo's beloved free-folk spellbinder Jameson Feakes. Friends since the early days of Tone List reuniting ❤️

— Mark Cain launches Threads on Tone List's label. A reignition of his practice of circular breathed sheets-of-sound soprano saxophone, we're thrilled to have one of the original Boorloo avant-improvisers join our roster.

Such a special experience meeting and learning from Kulintang master Hadaya Tarbamg and Bryan Batu Ellorimo in Davao city yesterday. I’ve been interested in this instrument for some years now so it was amazing to learn some of the foundations in traditional kulingtang. I learnt two basic traditional songs, the first titled ‘Bunok Bunok’ about rainfall, and the second titled ‘Sinayawan’, meaning to dance 🫶 taken in Davao City by @marianancy
