Did you know your recurrent UTIs may not be coming from your bladder at all?

I senior authored a new study that @npr just covered nationally. Of 253 women diagnosed with recurrent UTIs, only 15% had a problem limited to the urinary tract. In the vast majority, the root cause was hormonal changes to the vulvar tissue and microbiome, plus pelvic floor dysfunction. The infections were a symptom. The diagnosis stopped one level too early.

If you’ve been on antibiotic after antibiotic and the symptoms keep coming back, you are not crazy. You may simply never have been evaluated for the actual cause.

You cannot diagnose what you were never taught to examine. That is exactly why I built @vulvai.co

Thank you @meghanrabbitt for telling this story. Full NPR piece at the link in bio.

Ever gone to a doctor and been told:
It’s all in your head
Drink some wine
The pain can’t be that bad
Or it’s Just part of being a woman

You are not alone. You go to doctors as the experts, but they are not being trained on women’s bodies. The research we have been basing women’s health on has been predominantly on male bodies.

This is not a one off instance, this is a systemic issue.

We’re building an ecosystem around Vulva La Revolution to draw attention to the systemic inequities around women’s health and provide a pipeline from information into action so you are equipped once the credits roll.

Every revolution needs a cavalry and we are assembling. Join us. Collaborate with us.

This message is coming to the masses and we are ready to ride.

"It's all in your head" is the cheapest diagnosis in medicine. No exam, no test, no follow-up
required.

Pain with sex has physical causes you can point to thinning tissue, hormone loss, pelvic
floor muscles locked in guard mode, nerves misfiring. Each one shows up on an actual exam.
Each one has a treatment.

Dr. Maria Uloko treats this every day, and in this clip she walks through what's really
happening when sex hurts and why "just relax" was never going to fix a tissue problem.

Full conversation dropping Tuesday everywhere you get podcasts.

How many doctors did you see before one examined you instead of reassuring you? Give me the number.

The number in your biology textbook came from a cow.

Not a typo. The "8,000 nerve endings" fact everyone recites came from cattle research in the
1970s. Nobody had counted in a human, until 2022, when Dr. Maria Uloko did. The real
number blew past 10,000.

We mapped the entire human genome nineteen years before anyone performed that count.
That tells you whose anatomy medicine considers worth studying.

So she's not waiting for the system to fix itself. She's building Vulva AI doctors, founders,
and problem solvers creating a new one, because the current system wasn't built for women.
Or for the doctors trying to treat them.

We got into all of it on DisruptHER the study, the training gap, and what building the
replacement actually looks like.

Full episode out July 28th.

What's the women's health fact that shocked you most when you finally learned it? I'll read
every one.

Complex pelvic pain can feel isolating and hopeless. There is hope! And that hope is made even stronger with early diagnosis. That would require educating the doctors and patients which is our mission at VULVAi! by @mariaulokomd

New research is challenging the idea that persistent urinary symptoms are always about infection. What if hormones, vestibular health, and pelvic floor dysfunction are part of the story? Androgens matter. This paper raises important questions and highlights the need for prospective research in perimenopausal women experiencing recurrent urinary symptoms.
