The Backstein Reloaded exhibition is still on view until November 1st at @gewerbemuseum_winterthur

Don’t miss this beautiful exhibition, curated with care by @carolinenaphegyi

Backstein Reloaded brings together around 50 works by architects, designers and artists, exploring brick from different perspectives. The exhibition focuses on brick manufacturing, its ecological properties and its reinterpretation. It shows how this traditional building material continues to offer a wide range of possibilities today, constantly reinventing itself.

Ironically, for this travelling exhibition, we decided to build as little as possible. We adapted the entire scenography using materials already available at the Gewerbemuseum, and carried everything else in a cabin bag on the train from Brussels to Winterthur.

International Summer Seminar in Museology (SIEM) at @ecoledulouvre : 9 precious days to exchange with museum professionals from 14 countries, through lectures, workshops, and case studies exploring socio-ecological transitions in museums. These 10 days were not about becoming scientific experts, but about sharing and developing solutions at our own scale. Here is what we take away from this experience, from the perspective of exhibition design, space, and construction.

Museums and research are essential to turn intentions into action. Exhibition design should be part of this research: a space for experimentation and testing new approaches across museum departments to push our creativity beyond data and graphics.

In 2007, @museechassenature radically transformed its old exhibition design and scientific programme, moving away from an “ego-logical” perspective that presented Nature through a predominantly human-centred lens. This visit strongly resonated with our ongoing work at @mhnfribourg : in a natural history museum, how can exhibition design help visitors rethink their relationship with Nature?

The Jardin des Tuileries was designed as an expression of human power over Nature. Beyond its geometric and artificial composition, the garden raises questions about heritage and biodiversity. During our visit, Sylvain Parrot, head of the Tuileries Garden division, shared one of his main concerns: is the biodiversity historically associated with France still adapted to the climate and conditions of tomorrow?

Several tools and methodologies to assess the carbon impact of exhibitions and scenography. Want to be part of a cool collectif to rethink our carbon impact in scenography ?Join @ecotheque_ :)

A beautiful encounter at the Louvre: Martin Szekely’s wonderful chair for museum staff. These much-in demand pieces of furniture have been designed in distinct parts, mechanically assembled, to be repaired or exchanged if needed.

Found a postcard in the Louvre shop of the oil painting « Projet pour la transformation de la Grande Galerie », 1796 by Hubert Robert. A reminder that light has always been a fundamental part of imagining museum spaces.

For the Backstein Reloaded exhibition, Marie Douel Studio imagined a scenography as discreet as possible, allowing the monumental bricks artworks to take center stage. Light in both materiality and production, the scenography plays with gravity, drawing inspiration from one of the oldest construction tools in the world of brick: the plumb bob.

From Que veux-tu, Brique? at CID Grand-Hornu to Backstein Reloaded at Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, the exhibition continues its journey, and so does its scenography. Packed into a small suitcase and transported by train from Belgium to Switzerland, the original plumb bobs travel as spatial elements into a new context. These modular structures adapt to the new galleries while engaging in dialogue with existing elements from the museum's exhibition stock.

These suspended lines define the exhibition space, supporting texts, creating subtle boundaries, and establishing viewing distances. Light and fluid, the scenography quietly accompanies the enduring presence of the bricks, guiding the dialogue between the artworks, the architecture, and the visitors.

We are hosting a new Inspire Lecture Session Afterwork edition at Materiatek, in collaboration with Marie Douel.

Marie Douel’s studio specializes in exhibition scenography and spatial interventions. With a subtle approach, it places curatorial subjects within clear spatial narratives through a rational use of materials. Constantly engaged in research, the studio develops independent projects focused on eco-design and exhibitions in public spaces.

In this Afterwork format, Marie Douel will share her vision of scenography by creating connections between cinema and exhibition design. She will highlight the strength of collaborative work and the power of space in shaping how a subject is experienced.

📅 Wed 03.06 | 17:30–20:00 (Drinks and Snacks included)

🗣️ Event will be hold in English

📍 Materiatek, Rue van Malder 24

Designing an exhibition using only in-house materials. This ongoing research explores the potential of museum stocks as a creative resource. Technical Excel lists and museum elements guide our exploration of reversible connections, assembly, and ready-made solutions to create scenographic elements.

February - September 2025: Our first steps into the world of natural history, designing the new Historia room for the @mhnfribourg opening in 2028.

These past seven months have been a deep dive into the art of preserving natural specimens and researching how a new scenography can bring them to life.

The ICOM defines a museum as “a not-for-profit, permanent institution in the service of society that researches, collects, conserves, interprets and exhibits tangible and intangible heritage.”
But what happens when the heritage on display is nature itself?

At a time when our connection to the natural world keeps fading, what does it mean to exhibit nature behind glass? Should scenography aim to reproduce reality as faithfully as possible, or can it lean into fiction and poetry, to spark emotion and curiosity in future generations?

Together with the MHNF team, we’ve been reflecting on these questions, trying to see, within these still objects, not something frozen, but a quiet celebration of life.

At the @houseofeuropeanhistory, Presence of the Past is a statement, a call to reconsider how we engage with history and offer a space for expression and collective memory.

We cannot talk about memory, history, or public space without naming the violence that is happening currently in the ongoing genocide, wars, and the enduring weight of colonial legacies and power structures. These are not just stories of the past, they are echoes that shape our present.

These free-expression spaces designed in the exhibition are a reminder that memory is political and that we all have a role to play in confronting uncomfortable truths.

When @houseofeuropeanhistory asked us to write an article about our process in the catalogue, we felt both honored and a little unsettled.

As exhibition designers, we express our creativity through drawings and mock-up, but writing is not our confort zone. Our work is part of the larger technicians team where technical plans are our common language.
Still, we embraced the challenge of putting our process into words and explaining how we conceived the Past and Present exhibition.

Inspired by capriccios, imaginary architectural landscapes from the 18th century, the exhibition design form a fictional landscape blending past and present. Graphic design, typography and elements like marble or bluestone mix evoke layered past and constant evolving European history.

You can discover the full story in the article linked in bio.
