Studio Lemercier, 𝙏𝙝𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙙𝙨,
Exhibition at @hek_basel - August to November 2026

First focus on the two artworks at the very beginning of the space: Edges and Room
Both were conceived a few years ago but had their content totally redone for this exhibition : shorter edit, maybe a bit more "efficient" or direct.
These works explore the transformation of surfaces and simple geometric forms into spatial experiences through light and projection. While Edges unfolds within a three-dimensional architectural structure, using projected lines and grids to shift planes and suggest changing volumes, Room_00 is made of a flat surface, where light, shadow and geometric shapes create the illusion of depth. Together, they question how our perception of "reality" can be easily deceived and manipulated.

It's already been 3 weeks since our exhibition opened at @hek_basel 🤯🫠
With @joanielemercier we are particularly happy with the balance between works from the last couple of years and totally new ones coming from our recent travels and experimentations.
In the coming days I'll share more info and insights on the new installations.

For the Backstein Reloaded exhibition, Marie Douel Studio imagined a scenography as discreet as possible, allowing the monumental bricks artworks to take center stage. Light in both materiality and production, the scenography plays with gravity, drawing inspiration from one of the oldest construction tools in the world of brick: the plumb bob.

From Que veux-tu, Brique? at CID Grand-Hornu to Backstein Reloaded at Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, the exhibition continues its journey, and so does its scenography. Packed into a small suitcase and transported by train from Belgium to Switzerland, the original plumb bobs travel as spatial elements into a new context. These modular structures adapt to the new galleries while engaging in dialogue with existing elements from the museum's exhibition stock.

These suspended lines define the exhibition space, supporting texts, creating subtle boundaries, and establishing viewing distances. Light and fluid, the scenography quietly accompanies the enduring presence of the bricks, guiding the dialogue between the artworks, the architecture, and the visitors.

Amerika from @jorge_mendez_blake
« Architecture starts when you carefully put two bricks together » said Mies van der Rohe. The exhibition « Backstein reloaded », initially commissioned by le Cid-Grand Hornu (B), invites us to look again at the brick, not simply as a construction element, but as a material carrying memory, labour, technology, ecology, politics, and imagination.
The exhibition brings together around fifty works by architects, designers, artists, and researchers who explore the brick from multiple perspectives: as a structural element, as an ecological challenge, as a historical witness, as a design tool, and as a medium for experimentation and artistic expression.
