step 1: acquire friends (extra pts if they have a cool house)
step 2: snag a hot chef
step 3: train your guy besties on two cocktails and make them tend bar for a ladies-only pregame cocktail hour while the hot chef boyfriend makes pizzas from scratch with your homemade kimchi
step 4: party until 3am

last month, i hosted my first *official* bapsang 🇰🇷
i didn’t know what kind of supper club i wanted to create, so i focused on the simple things: delicious food, great company, and heavy pours ;)

those are the lifelong recipes for a good time.

so, i picked a date, set a menu, and crossed my fingers. not only did the seats sell out in 4 days, but the outpouring excitement and support was overwhelming, and extremely affirming.

the dinner was everything i wanted, and more //

genuine friends meeting familiar strangers, sharing dishes and exchanging stories from forgotten corners and cornerstone memories, revived from primal desires to connect and cultivate meaning //

honoring my culture by sharing flavors from the motherland, and even creating new bites that excite and delight. and of course, korean food embodies a drinking culture so endless pours of pear martinis and plum daiquiris, while beer and soju would circulate the table for a clean break to cleanse the palate //

nothing makes me happier.

guests stayed til past last call while i sat with sam, thanking him (as my supper sous, i couldn’t have done it without him) and recapping favorite moments, groaning over a dish i forgot to put out, replaying service moments and how to get better, but giddy with joy, not even knowing i was starving because i completely forgot to eat, because i was so full of love&pride.

thank you to the homies who helped, those who got a seat & brought in new friends, and thank you everyone for coming along for the ride 🙇🏻‍♀️

what’s on the menu:
🍗 fried chicken; double fried, spicy gochujang + garlic soy
🍤 sweet&spicy shrimp bites in perilla wraps
🫓 kimchi jeon; fermented spicy cabbage made into flat fritters
🥒 spicy cukes; my favorite banchan (side dish), lightly pickled with rice vinegar with korean red pepper flakes, garlic, sesame
🥣 traditional korean soup made with bean sprouts, anchovy broth, tofu
🍚 purple rice; mixed grains with white, brown & black rice

🍸ALL YOU CAN DRINK 🍻
pear and plum soju-tinis and beeeeeer
(because i just wanna get you a little f*cked up 😉)

* bapsang directly translates to “rice table” and loosely means dinner table in korean. a meal isn’t wuite complete without rice on the table, with a variety of side dishes, soups, and other tasty things to make that perfect bite. family-style, always.

so, this is the first bapsang i’ll be hosting.

i’ve been torn on what i wanted to cook for my first supper, and i decided to give the ppl what they want… KOREAN-FRIED CHICKEN.

치맥 (chi-maek) refers to chicken & beer (maek-ju) and it’s become an iconic pairing ever since fried chicken got introduced during the korean war and popularized when cooking oil became commercially available.
