Hi folks. My use of this app is on/off again and I sometimes worry I'll miss a time sensitive message or a friendly reach out (and I do value those so very much). Please email or text me for anything time sensitive, otherwise I will get around to seeing all the funny memes and reels when I can. If you don't know how to reach me, my work email is publicly searchable through brandonu.ca. Thank you ❤️ by @marikajazz

👀 The secret is out! Find us at Public Domain (633 Portage Ave) for an afternoon improv-forward round robin of sets from @marikajazz , @melodymckivermusic and @forestine

There are still some rsvp spots left, so yes you can still come! Find the link in our bio!

Marika Galea is a bassist, composer and educator from Scarborough, Ontario. Her performance work spans jazz, pop, folk, indie, hip hop, new music and experimental genres, earning her a 2025 nomination in Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll (Rising Star on Electric Bass). Through improvisation and groove-based storytelling, Marika's music explores connection, conflict and dreams. Musical projects she has collaborated on have been nominated for (or won) JUNO, Golden Globe, Academy, Polaris, Iris, RIDM and HotDocs Awards.

Melody McKiver’s (they/them) musical work integrates electronics with Western classical music to shape a new genre of Anishinaabe compositions. A proud member of Obishikokaang Lac Seul First Nation, Melody is currently Assistant Professor of Indigenous Music (tenure-track) with the Desaultels Faculty of Music at the University of Manitoba and a member of the Mizi'iwe Aana Kwat (LGBTQ2S+ Council) within the Anishinaabe Nation of Treaty #3. A frequent performer across Turtle Island, Melody has performed at the National Arts Centre, Luminato Festival, Vancouver’s Western Front, and the Toronto International Film Festival. They have shared stages with Polaris Prize winners Lido Pimienta, Tanya Tagaq, and Jeremy Dutcher, and performed with acclaimed filmmaker and musician Alanis Obomsawin.

forestine is an experimental ambient artist who uses modular synthesis to explore vulnerability and feelings through shifting textures, noise, melody, and time. Often employing found audio, local data, or samples taken from their immediate environment in the Prairies, they enjoy the ephemeral nature of modular, where sounds only exist in a single place and time. forestine is also one of the founding members of Earth Modular Society, an friendly and welcoming online modular synthesizer-focused community focused on an open-mic 24/7 stream. taken in Public Domain by @marikajazz

Gorgeous people of Winnipeg - save the date for June 18! The perfect 5 à 7/happy hour for FREE on the main stage in Old Market Square, thanks to the sponsors @jazzwinnipeg ❤️

Fractures is a musical search for hope, unity and community as three musicians reckon with the global fractures that challenge us all.

@tetyana.har is a drummer and composer born in Ukraine to Ukrainian and Cuban parents, brings a highly personal voice to the drums. Her music combines rhythmic detail, sensitivity, and emotional storytelling.

@marikagalea is a versatile bassist and composer. She was recognized in the 2025 Downbeat Magazine’s Critics’ Poll as a rising star on electric bass and named one of CBC Music’s 2017 top Canadian jazz artists under 35.

@jongordonmusic1 is one of the most successful alto and soprano saxophonists of his generation. His accomplishments include the 1996 Thelonious Monk Award, a JUNO nomination for his 2021 album, “Stranger than Fiction” and his recent release, “7th Ave South”, being selected by the Times of London as one of the best jazz CDs of 2024. taken in The Cube! Playing the beautiful music of @gregorygrooverjr back in March with @cartergrahammusic and @ericsplatz. I take pride in inviting people with beautiful human and music values to share with students and I am so honored Gregory answered that call and shared his music with us.

To teach my lovely students, jump on a plane and see friends, play the beautiful music of @andresvialmusic and learn more about our beautiful jazz community (namely the incredible volunteers running @yardbirdsuiteyeg) is a dream come true.

On to a sold out crowd @buckingjampalace in Calgary, and more gorgeous people.

I don't take any of it for granted.

I am a tenured professor!

I don't know conclusively if I am the first Canadian woman to be tenured as a jazz and contemporary popular music instrumentalist in our beautiful country, but I do know I am one of very few. I am certainly not the first to have worked her tail off in the field, and I celebrate all people working to improve and adapt jazz studies and institutions of higher education through this accomplishment.

I am eternally grateful to my colleagues for their mentorship, and most of all to my current and former students for shaping me into both a better pedagogue and person. I have changed and learned so much in ways I could not have imagined when I drove my new car (used, but a first for me!) from Montréal to Brandon in 2021, and every day is different. I commit to continued learning and growth, with respect for both the students and the music.

Thanks so much to @mattduboff for taking this cute faculty headshot recently.
