A little introduction, or a reintroduction if you’ve been here a while. 🤍

I’m Marika. Okanagan REALTOR®, Associate Broker, mentor, and millennial mom of two. This year marks 20 years in real estate, and I’m nowhere near done!

I love helping people find their place, make a confident move and build a business they’re proud of.

I also love a quiet morning, a good movie and a piece of furniture with potential. Apparently, I see potential everywhere!

My 40s hit differently. I’m still growing and still ambitious, with plenty of chapters ahead. I’m also making room for my kids, my hobbies and the moments I won’t get back.

Stop waiting for the perfect time. Your courage will create opportunities.

When I first started in real estate, I chased every client I could.

Cold calling. Door knocking. Following up. Trying to figure out the perfect time to knock on someone’s door so I could casually say hello while very obviously trying to sell their house.

I attended every event I could find. Every networking opportunity. Pop-up trade shows. Community events. Mom meet-ups. If there was a room full of people I could meet, I was probably there.

Literally everything.

I didn’t love all of it, but I knew I had to grow my business. So I got uncomfortable, introduced myself to people I didn’t know and kept going.

Eventually, it worked.

Not because I found some secret sauce.

There isn’t one.

Sometimes you just have to be willing to do whatever it takes. Try things. Be awkward. Hear no. Show up again. Follow up. Learn. Adjust. Keep moving.

Back then, social media wasn’t what it is today.

Now, we have this incredible way to connect with people before we ever meet in person.

I’m not here to be everyone’s Realtor and that’s the point.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that the relationship between a Realtor and their client matters more than people realize.

When it’s not a good match from the beginning, everything can feel harder. Communication gets frustrating. Trust is harder to build. Decisions feel heavier. And a process that already has a lot of moving parts can go sideways pretty quickly.

We’re all different, clients and Realtors, and that’s exactly why there are so many of us to choose from.

Most experienced Realtors know how to market a home, position a property, work with buyers, negotiate and navigate the rules of a real estate transaction.

But there’s one thing you can’t really measure on a résumé:

Do you work well together?

Do you communicate the same way?
Do you trust their advice?
Do you feel comfortable asking questions?
Do you feel heard?
Do you actually like working together?

That matters.

And here’s something else I think people forget: real estate changes, and so do we.

What worked 20 years ago isn’t the same as what works today. What worked 10 years ago has changed too. Even compared to last year, the market, technology, expectations and the way we communicate keep evolving.

And people evolve right along with it.

Lives change. Priorities change. Seasons of life change. Sometimes a Realtor who wasn’t the right fit for you years ago might actually be a much better fit now because you’ve changed, they’ve changed, or both.

So interview a few Realtors. Ask questions. Have a conversation. See who feels like the right fit for you, right now.

Because choosing a Realtor isn’t only about who can do the job.

It’s about who you want beside you while you do it. ⭐️

Life at Real Broker, Episode 4: No office. No problem. ☕️🏡

My office? Sometimes it’s at home. Sometimes it’s my parked car between showings. And sometimes connecting with colleagues looks like brunch.

Having a brokerage office is a personal preference. If you love going in every day, I get it! But for me, working from home is a luxury, and I love having that flexibility.

I don’t need a desk at a brokerage to serve my clients well. I need good systems, access to support, and people I can connect with.

Community doesn’t have to happen down the hallway. You can build it over coffee, on a call, or around a table.

Our income isn’t monthly. So why are our brokerage bills? 👀

Welcome to Life at Real, Episode 3 🤍 Let’s talk monthly brokerage fees.

As real estate agents, we work on commission. No guaranteed paycheque every two weeks, yet at many brokerages, that monthly bill arrives whether you’ve closed a deal or not.

One of the things I love about Real? No monthly brokerage fee. We pay our commission split when we get paid.

There are still costs to running a real estate business, of course. But having one less fixed monthly expense? That makes a difference.
