For those who’ve only seen Coach Kola screeching at tournaments, this is the side that you don’t see.

The calm, technical educator who wants each of students to understand every aspect of the moves they are doing so they can accurately practice them, rep them, and perform them in competition.

Sometimes it’s as simple as a hand placement that makes the difference, while other times, it’s back to back rolls. Each of those moments is imperative to build champions. No shortcuts over here. by @marilynbjj

Last week, two of my students asked Coach Izzy, “Why isn’t Coach Marilyn a purple belt yet?”

To which he replied “well she hasn’t successfully passed my guard yet.”

They said, “Well if we help her pass your guard, will you promote her?”

To which he said “yes.”

I was made aware of the business deal and it was negotiated to happen on Thursday giving me one week to prepare and my anxiety immediately shot through the roof.

After training for a week, Thursday came and I had diarrhea the entire day thinking about being put on the spot in front of my students, my peers and my coaches.

I spent the evening training from 5PM to 10:30PM

The last round, I almost passed Coach Izzy guard (debatable bc I think I passed 😭) and I thought it was done.

Two white belts were getting smashed by Coach Kola and Coach Will. Then, out of nowhere, Coach Jollene comes and drags me by my lapels and sweeps me straight under her mount, smashing me, smothering me and holding me there for God knows how long. I’m struggling to breathe as the kids are circled around us and screaming “GO COACH MARILYN!” and coaching me.

Then I feel the weight of the world come on top of me. There’s Coach Kola, 240lbs of straight black belt. I was cooked.

I moved to safety as best I could, with Coach screaming at me under duress to finish a triangle. A buzzer went off and the weight lifted.

Last night, Coach Kola promoted me to purple belt and it couldn’t have been more grueling, yet so sweet.

It’s not often you meet genuine people in life let alone in such a serendipitous way as in a random jiu jitsu class.

Delia received her blue belt this week and I could not be more honored and proud to share the mats with her to watch her promotion and celebrate her birthday.

Delia is someone who has pushed me in ways I never thought I would have to push through on the mats. Dealing with another woman who’s so strong and technical, it’s been so much fun and rewarding to learn and grow with you.
