Marina Peng (@marina.peng) makes textile drawings and tapestries in St. Louis, work she describes as exploring ā€œhow patterns form across generations.ā€ She had a lot of alone time as a kid and spent it collecting materials and making unexpected things with them. From there she moved through drawing, installation and sculpture before she started weaving and punch needling in 2020. Her figures are almost always red. In her family’s culture the colour stands for life, joy and prosperity, and elsewhere it signals violence or danger. She says, ā€œI think of all the figures as being different parts of me. Even the hands are my own hands.ā€ Underneath all of it is what it’s like to grow up second-generation American in the Midwest, trying to honour two sets of values at once. by @marina.peng

The Line
2026
Wool, cotton, dye, burlap
50 x 74 inches

🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔🪔

ā€œThe Lineā€ is a scene in an imagined factory. Several laborers hover over a work table, stitching together a new figure in their image. A blanket of smoke hangs in the air.

Some questions I asked myself while working on this piece: What happens when their work is complete? Does the new ā€œmeā€ come to life and hop off the table as the end product, the last in line? Or does she pull up a chair and join the factory line, getting straight to work on creating another? How many more can there be? What happens if the room keeps filling with smoke? by @marina.peng

ā€œnever evenā€ is an 18 ft long textile looped into a Möbius strip through the window cavities of NON STNDRD. I sewed the work directly onto the concrete bunker (or, I sewed the concrete bunker into the work). The infinitely intertwining hands and arms motif is based on an ornamental brick in the National Building Arts Center’s collection. The installation is part of the group exhibition ā€œPhantom Frameā€ curated by @allison_lacher and @_jeff_robinson_ , now on view through Sat, July 18th. Please join us for a closing event on the 18th from 1–4pm, with a performance by @jwchavez + a collab performance by @shirende and @gracielagze ā¤ļø

A new piece and a peek into the making of. For ā€œDownstreamā€ I spliced together two different toned burlaps—a natural and a light—and applied dye, which created two different blues. The pointing hands cross over the boundary of the faded blue (the past) into the bright blue (the present). The arms are arranged like a halo around the cornered figure, a subversion of the red sun symbolism popular in chinese propaganda posters during the cultural revolution. With this work I was thinking about how generational anxieties cross over into the next generation and manifest in unpredictable ways.

Last October I made this small weaving across two days at @21cstl. I’ve since made an edition of three, which are now available under the new ā€œAvailable Worksā€ section on my website (link in bio). Planning on making more editions this year, stay tuned 🫶

The image is of my hands reaching into the ā€œpastā€ and braiding the hair of my younger self, a self-parenting fantasy and a reflection on girlhood.
