Marina Peng (@marina.peng) makes textile drawings and tapestries in St. Louis, work she describes as exploring “how patterns form across generations.” She had a lot of alone time as a kid and spent it collecting materials and making unexpected things with them. From there she moved through drawing, installation and sculpture before she started weaving and punch needling in 2020. Her figures are almost always red. In her family’s culture the colour stands for life, joy and prosperity, and elsewhere it signals violence or danger. She says, “I think of all the figures as being different parts of me. Even the hands are my own hands.” Underneath all of it is what it’s like to grow up second-generation American in the Midwest, trying to honour two sets of values at once.

In praise of @stove_works here are some photos from my time in Chattanooga last June…

I had such a rich experience in this residency program. I arrived planning to mostly edit and develop the triptych installation, but found myself largely immersed in the letterpress studio at @theopenpresscha, thanks to the patience and generosity of everyone there. i was surprised to find something in the process that clicked for me and many nights disappeared into the morning. They also have hands down my favorite woodshop to work in (raw plywood walls, level concrete floor, wall of 2 windowed garage doors).

Along the way I shared a work-in-progress section of Film B: by the time I see you in the morning , and saw remarkable work develop in neighboring studios, had cheap beer and burgers at Lo Main. Wandered on bike. Converged with folks in the kitchen and spontaneously had heady esoteric conversations that filled my soul.

This is a really special place for artists. The staff is exceptionally generous and available and the space / public programming was really conducive to focused work as well as connecting with other residents and the local artist community. Highly recommend checking them out.

And mark your calendars for a closing event on Saturday, July 18, from 1:00–4:00 p.m., featuring a performance by exhibiting artist Juan William Chávez and a collaborative performance by Chicago-based artists Shir Ende and Graciela Gonzalez.

Some contextual notes:

Sauget, Illinois, was originally incorporated in 1926 under the name “Monsanto” as it was founded by the Monsanto Chemical Company to provide a lighter regulatory and tax environment for its heavy chemical production. It was later renamed “Sauget” (pronounced “soh-ZHAY”) in 1969 to honor its first mayor, Leo Sauget.

The village of Monsanto/Sauget is historically known as ground zero for the production of nearly all polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) used in the United States from the 1930s through the 1970s. This legacy of heavy industrial chemical manufacturing has left a significant environmental footprint, prompting numerous ongoing environmental cleanup efforts and legal actions. Informed by its proximity to one of the most expansive collections of built environment artifacts in the United States—that of the National Building Arts Center and the industrial environment around it,
‘Phantom Frame’ engages a site where architectural artifacts, industrial remnants, and landscape conditions persist beyond the structures and systems they once belonged to. The exhibition explores what survives when structure falls away and how fragments continue to generate new frameworks of meaning.

‘Phantom Frame’ begins with the architectural language of ornament, form, and structure, while also considering how fragments shape the frames through which meaning is constructed and understood. Expanding outward into broader considerations of attachment and detachment, context and reinterpretation, preservation and transformation, the exhibition ultimately reflects on the generative possibilities of incompleteness. It proposes that fragments need not point only toward loss or absence, but may instead offer new ways of understanding history, memory, and the unstable structures—physical, cultural, and emotional—that continue to shape lived experience.
