The installation unfolds as a single spatial organism, echoing the structure of a three-nave church while suspended somewhere between a hospital, a slaughterhouse, and a boutique, spanning three temporal phases and holding one body alongside three works in tension.

The Void (video, 4’2”), 2016
Held in the collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon (macLYON) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade, The Void is part of Personal Stories / Political Realities, curated by @isabelle.bertolotti , @maja.kolaric , @matthieu_lelievre, @micakaric .

On view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Belgrade until September 20.
@maclyon_officiel @msub_mocab

“In her art, Marina Marković takes her own corporeality as both the subject and object of research into various forms of social pressure, norms, and mechanisms of control imposed upon the female body.
In The Void, a recording of the artist’s empty womb is juxtaposed with statements by her mother, aunts, grandmothers, and great-grandmother concerning the primary female roles and duties imposed upon them by society, exposing the arguments of the “natural,”
“scientific,” “objective,” “neutral,” and “normal” as instruments of dominant policies that mark any irregularity as deviation and anomaly. The work confronts viewers with a complex, emotional, difficult, and painful conflict in which the line between free will and social/ biopolitical coercion becomes impossible to clearly discern. The mantric repetition of the question “Who said you could choose?” opens a twofold reading in which the personal and the inherited become inseparable, while the artist recognizes her own position as the first in her family line with the possibility of choice — precisely where this ambivalence emerges as a space for negotiation and reflection.”

Marina Markovic @marina____markovic (b.1983)
The Void, 2016 | exhibition Personal Stories / Political Realities, Belgrade, #Serbia, 2026

About the artwork:
The Void (15’ video loop, 2016); ultrasound recording of artist’s pulsating empty uterus without any narrative progression, dialectically opposed by the sound image of emotional preaching speech on women primary roles and duties, performed by artists mother, grandmother, great-grandmother.
In The Void Markovic is pointing out the hardly seizable distinction between the conscientious choice and culturally imposed models / biopolitical coercion and questioning what ‘being free’ or ‘being forced’ means in the context of womanhood.

Join us on 13 July at 6:00 pm for an Artist Talk with Marina Marković at LEFTBANK.
Working through a corporeal language, Marković approaches the body as both material and method, exploring the intersections of power, pleasure, control, and resistance. The talk will offer insight into her artistic practice and the work developed during her residency at Common Ground Vienna.

We are delighted to welcome Marina Marković as the current resident artist at Common Ground Art Residency in Vienna.
During her residency from mid-June to mid-July 2026, Marković will be developing a new drawing series.

The corporeal is the central focus of Marina Marković’s (Yugoslavia, 1983) artistic practice, which spans from personal experience to the exploration of complex social issues concerning women’s bodies. The experience of anorexia in her early youth directed her work towards the politics of the body, the (de)construction of gender and sexuality, and the economics of desire, while revealing the network of power relations where free will and coercion are densely intertwined.

Since 2006, she has presented solo exhibitions and performances in Belgrade/RS, New York/US, Vienna/AT, Paris/FR, Bern/CH. A recent long-term project, The Arrangement, has unfolded through multiple iterations across different venues, ultimately culminating in a comprehensive exhibition at the Salon of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade (2024). Her works have been featured in international exhibitions and biennials, including Histoires personnelles / Réalités politiques at Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon in 2025, Performissima at Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles, Paris in 2025 and 60. and Aesthetic(s) of Encounter(s) at 60.October Salon in Belgrade in 2024. Marković has participated in numerous artist-in-residence programmes, including residencies at ISCP New York/US and Q21/MuseumsQuartier Vienna/AT.

Marković is the recipient of several prestigious awards, such as the Young Visual Artist “Dimitrije Bašičević Mangelos” Award in 2011 and the Drawing Award given by the “Vladimir Veličković” Foundation in 2021. Her works are part of significant public and private collections, including museum collections nationally and internationally. She is a PhD candidate at the Department of New Media, University of Arts in Belgrade. Marković lives and works in between Belgrade and Paris.
