By creating an artwork with the vertical hoop found in pre-Columbian ball courts, my collaborator and I (@segal_rafi) shifted game play to a choreography similar to how they might have moved 4,000 years ago. To score points, players jump and swing their arms more laterally than how people move on contemporary basketball courts today. The hardest place to score points from is directly in front of the vertical hoop — the area that we call the dead zone. It’s close to impossible unless you leap to the side while telegraphing your arms to shoot horizontally. At @thehoopcycle’s event with @nba @chicagobulls at @unitedcenter on Aug 23-24, 2025, those who scored from the dead zone won a prize — the limited edition bball I designed for the event. I posted myself on the ground to photograph these kids jumping for hours from the same spot. As I someone obsessed by technical sports (balance sports in my case) and the reps they require, I was in full appreciation of these kids’ commitment to honing their skills. It was fascinating imagining people millennia ago moving in similar fashion. The HOOPcycle was designed by aforementioned @segal_rafi (an architect who plays bball) and myself (I am a nube). It was commissioned by @thenphm (The National Public Housing Museum) with support from @joycefdn. ❤️#bullsfest #hoopcycle @bullscommunity @losbulls #MarisaJahn #MarisaMoránJahn #RafiSegal #chicagobulls #contemporaryart by @marisa_jahn

“ReCreation” is a new, permanent wallpaper installation by artist @marisa_jahn at The National Public Housing Museum (@thenphm) that celebrates the cultural efflorescence and leadership of low income Black mothers in Baltimore who successfully advocated for equal access to education and recreation programs for their families. Jahn is an alum of MIT ACT (@actmit) who was selected as the 2022-3 Artist Instigator at The National Public Housing Museum, reflects: “When I first moved to New York City and lived in public housing, the thing I recall most vividly was the sound of kids playing. The archival images remixed with colorful backdrops strive to capture this experience of joy and points to the importance of recreational equity.” The artwork was created by Jahn through multi-year collaborative research with community developer Micah Campbell-Smith @maica_cs and a team of nurse practitioners led by Dr. Sarah Szanton, Dean, School of Nursing (@johnshopkinsu). Jahn notes: “When we interviewed older adults in Baltimore who lived through this era, the feeling of solidarity was remarkable and inspiring — we wanted to dig deeper and learn why.” There were many examples where communities organized to overcome structural negligence such as block-by-block street sweeps, food banks, and community health centers. Micah recalls, “In an era when Black medical practitioners were barred from being doctors, my grandpa became one of Baltimore’s first Black pharmacists who would regularly help those who couldn’t afford to see a doctor.” This era between 1964 and the late 1970s, supported by both bottom-up civil rights leaders and top-down federal financing created a lasting, generational legacy of solidarity still alive in young people today — and what Szanton refers to as “structural resilience.” Team:Comms: @ximenanbqk Studio assistance: @the_flaire @anan_draws Jahn is represented by @saparcontemporaryPhoto by @colinbphoto @blockclubchiPhotos with the artist: Ronnie McKayPermissioned archival images: Robert Breck Chapman Archive at U of Baltimore#wallpaper #contemporaryart #MarisaJahn #MarisaMoránJahn by @marisa_jahn

If you’re in San Antonio, I invite you to get Tipsy in Texas, a recent commission of my work at the San Antonio Museum of Art (@sama_art) on view through November 2027. Join me June 7th (6-7 pm CT) for an artist’s talk. “TIPSY” is a site-specific installation that explores the role of art and “spirits” (drinks made from distilled and fermented plants) in shifting perspective and communing with the divine or with others. To create the artwork, I interviewed SAMA’s curators to learn about how folks “got tipsy” back in the day. For example, Hathor, ancient Egypt’s goddess of love, beauty, sex, and drinking, flooded the Nile with beer. As Lynley McAlpine, Assoc Curator of Provenance Research notes, “Fertility is the core of both sexiness and motherliness, right? In a period when there’s large infant mortality, you want them conjoined, as opposed to, say, more puritanical representations of women in which it really makes much less sense.” Other delightful tidbits from the interviews include the Mayan Lord known as “Fat Cacique” (A.D. 770s) and his power-sharing ritual of hallucinogenic enemas.FREE - Link in bio. ❤️Appreciating this thoughtful review in @artapartofculture by critic/curator @barbara.martusciello in which she compares the HOOPcycle to a few of @krzysztof_wodiczko’s public artworks: both affirm engagement in civic space as a democratic impulse. With the @thehoopcycle, the MesoAmerican basketball court on wheels I created with @segal_rafi, the vehicle activates players to figure how it’s played, its rules, how to play together (or against each other). Wodiczko’s “interrogative designs” (a term he coined) take forms of serious play that invite passersby explore the site in relationship to users in new ways. But Martusciello picks up this self-same impulse shared by Wodizcko, myself and Rafi, and many others who go to study at MIT — a vested interested in collaboration and civic experimentation. Rafi’s work arrives at the HOOPcycle somewhat directly: he plays bball, is a practicing architect interested in transforming public space, and he teaches at MIT as a professor in architecture + urbanism. For myself, throughout my twenties and thirties, I created a number of vehicles which I saw as kits to explore the unknown. After I learned of Wodiczko’s work, I applied to study at @actmit where he taught. Years later when I myself taught at MIT, Columbia, and now at Parsons, I’ve continued to share Wodiczko’s timeless writing about layered, and imbricated publics that can inhere in a single project. You can read Wodiczko’s essay alongside writings by others (including me) in a recent @mitpress book called @interrogativedesign edited by @@ianwojtowicz.#interrogativedesign #hoopcycle #artanddemocracy by @marisa_jahn
