A tribute to the culture that taught me the meaning of hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance 🇲🇽🌞

I am a proud First Generation American on my father’s side and First-Generation college graduate- terms that are now suppressed in education here in Florida. I pursued a career in education with the hope of making social change. Education is a powerful tool that not only teaches you to think critically but also offers a means of social and economic mobility. So it is no surprise that it became a target.

It is soul-crushing to watch a field I once cared about so much fall to the bastardization of the Trump administration. Leaders cowardly comply with immigration crackdowns and the defunding of DEI initiatives. They have cut federal funding directly supporting students from underserved populations, and now I have to witness institutions meant to protect students comply with ICE. I myself have been forced to remain compliant in my own career, having to avoid phrases such as “diversity”, “first generation”, “minority”, and removing my work from any real sense of social activism. The purpose and drive behind my career have been stripped away, causing a decline in passion and mental stability.

I watch as my own identity is not only censored but also becomes a target of fascist ideology. It started with the policing of language in education to now witnessing families being forcefully separated, individuals being detained without due process, and victims brutally murdered in daylight.

So while I feel like I cannot make the difference I hoped for in my career, I will do so through my art. I will be creating a series of artworks for sale, with 75% of the profits going directly to the Immigration Defense Network whose mission is to defend immigrant rights. And to all the students, whether in college or in High School, I hope you continue to exercise your right to protest and call out an administration when it fails to protect you!

Please take care of one another and pay attention to what is happening to this country.

OMG!! I can’t believe this is real! @taylorswift bought my stickers and it’s now on her sourdough bread that she gave to @latenightseth. AHHH! Love to see how far my cat stickers are going and I am so elated to have this happen!! This will be the highlight of my career 😂

Finding solace in your solitude is such a wonderful gift to find✨

In the midst of the chaos that was 2020, I learned to enjoy reading again, I fell back in love with art, I achieved personal fitness/health goals, and most importantly I've learned that it was never about forcing happiness, it's about not letting the sadness win.
